Weekly Wrap-Up: Dreams of Northern Italy, Crazy Badgers and More (September 16, 2012)

Welcome to the weekly wrap-up!

This week we started and ended in Northern Italy -- Alto Adige to be exact. This region is quickly becoming one of my very favorites for finding value priced wines. We covered a white and a red this week and still have many more to explore so stay tuned!

We began the week with the 2010 Colterenzio Weisshaus Pinot Bianco, a zesty and rich Pinot Blanc with the ability to age 5-10 years.

On Tuesday, we went to something completely different: the 2011 Honey Badger Sweet Red Wine. Don't like sweet red wine? Honey Badger don't care. This wine is smooth and sweet and if you're a fan of Apothic Red, you probably want to give it a try.

On Wednesday we went back to Italy, but this time to Sicily to try a white wine that combines indigenous Sicilian grapes with Chardonnay and Viognier: the 2011 Donnafugata Anthilia Sicilia Bianco.

Thursday we traveled all the way to South Africa to sample a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Shiraz, 14% Grenache and 14% Petit Verdot. The 2009 Thelema Mountain Red begins with an eye-opening aroma and ends with bold, smooth and spicy flavors you don't want to miss.

Friday we covered the most popular varietal in the country, Chardonnay. And the 2010 Wild Horse Unbridled Chardonnay is perhaps the best tasting Chardonnay we've found under $20.

And finally to end the week we went back to Alto Adige, this time for one of the most popular red varieties in the area, Lagrein. The 2009 Castel Sallegg Lagrein Riserva is elegant, smooth and substantial.

Also this week:
Lot18 is now offering many of their wines all the time, not just on flash sales. This means you can buy wines like the 2008 Leone d'Oro Vino Nobile di Montepulciano - I Smell Bacon!!, the 2009 Caligiore Reserve Malbec - The Hit of The Party and the 2008 Quattro Leoni Vino Rosso Barbera d'Asti - An Aromatic and Succulent Italian Red any time! (We gave all three of these wines a 9/10 Taste Rating.) New sign-ups get an extra $10 off through this link.

Speaking of deals, if you've ever been frustrated trying to find our recommended buys you'll definitely want to pay attention this week. We've got a special deal coming up that I think everyone will enjoy!
