Duchman Family Winery Montepulciano – An Eye-Opener

By: Jon Thorsen Published: January 15, 2021 Last Updated: February 8, 2023

A surprising and tasty find from Texas, the Duchman Family Winery Montepulciano.

Duchman Family Winery Montepulciano – An Eye-Opener

Montepulciano from the Oswald Vineyard in the Texas High Plains AVA in Brownfield, Texas (near Lubbock).

Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $35 but it is available at Total Wine locations in Texas for just $17. Ready to buy? Check your local retailers.

    From the bottle:

100% Texas Grapes. 100% Texas Wines. That is the philosophy behind Duchman Family Winery. We work with the top growers in the state, select the varietals best suited for Texas, and adhere to exacting standards in the winery in order to produce world-class wines from our home in Driftwood. Texas Winemaker Dave Reilly is relentless in his pursuit of wines that are true to the character of each varietal as well as to the soil from which they were born.

We dedicate this wine to our grape growers, staff, friends, families, and you! We sincerely hope that you enjoy this wine as much as we enjoy crafting each vintage. You have made us what we are today. Thank you.

    -Stan and Lisa Duchman, Proprietors
    Dave Reilly, Winemaker

Made and Bottled by Duchman Family Winery
    14.5% Alcohol

The 2016 Duchman Family Winery Montepulciano begins with a lovely, succulent aroma of ripe dark berry fruit and spice plus a little vanilla, cigar box and a touch of earthiness too.

Tasting the wine reveals more dark berry fruit almost tending towards prunes and raisins, as well as some wonderfully integrated spice notes and cola. Add in great balance and good acidity and this is just a lovely wine. It does need a bit of time to breathe but it really opens up wonderfully after some time in the glass.

It ends with a dry, really long and lingering, savory finish that even features some dusty tannins. Excellent, this is quite yummy stuff. And what a delight to find this in Texas!

Ready to buy? Check your local retailers.
