It comes from the Housley’s, who are have been well known for growing excellent grapes in the Napa Valley since the mid-1970s. They’ve also been making their own wines at their Century Oak Winery estate in the Mokelumne River AVA of Lodi since 2000.
In fact, they bought and revitalized the old vines of the vineyard at Century Oaks (using their plentiful Napa Valley experience) about a decade before opening up the winery. Today’s excellent example of Cabernet Sauvignon comes from those very same old vines.

It is grown, crushed, aged and bottled all on site. It is aged in mostly new French Oak barrels for 26 months and has all the signatures of a new world cabernet. On the nose you’ll get deep berries and spice, which pairs nicely with the wine on the palate. This estate cabernet has silky tannins, with hints of dark plum, pepper, wild cherry and dark berries. It is very well balanced and pairs fantastically with food. This is our most popular wine and a true “house Cabernet”.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 Housley’s Century Oak Winery Judy’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with pleasing aromas of black cherry and other dark berry fruit, baking spice, a little cedar, a little leather, a little cigar box and a little licorice. There’s lots to discover here and the longer it breathes, the more subtleties that come out.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be nicely tannic with plenty of dark berry fruit and well-integrated spice. It’s still in its youth, but it’s really delicious already with even more development to come. This would be great with a burger! 20 months in new French oak is a LOT, but this one has the fruit to able to handle it and the result is pretty amazing at this price.
It ends dry, quite long, grippy and a bit chewy. It gets better the longer it is open so don’t be afraid to give it lots of air. It held up on day 2 just fine.
