While grapes have been grown here for centuries, Ribera del Jucar is one of the youngest Spanish wine regions in terms of being recognized as its own appellation. Known for intense red wines, this little known region is a great place to find value in classic Spanish wines.
The area benefits from a cooler climate than the La Mancha region next door, thanks in part to the Jucar River for which the region is named. It also benefits from the loose pebble and clay “soil” that allows for good drainage of the sparse rainfall and encourages deep root systems.
Today we have an wonderful, small production – just 5,016 individually numbered bottles (418 cases) – blend of 57% Tempranillo, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Bobal that is aged 12 months in new and one-year-old American oak.
Vegan, made with organic grapes and low in sulfites, this is the good stuff. Harmonious, smooth, nicely tannic and structured with the ability to age, this wine normally retails for around $30. Not so today…

ABOUT RUTH FERNÁNDEZ CLÁSICO: Inspired by Spain’s winemaking tradition, Ruth crafted this wine to reflect the character of our Ribera del Júcar terroir. The 2022 vintage offered ideal conditions, yielding wines with ripe fruit and fresh acidity. Hand-harvested at night, the Bobal, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon were aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old American oak. Only 5,016 bottles produced.
TASTING NOTES: Deep cherry red color with purple hints. Aromas of black cherry, plum, and sweet spices. Smooth and full on the palate, with well-integrated oak, firm tannins, and a long, elegant finish.
SOIL: Topsoil of loose pebbles with a deep clay layer underneath. The Denomination of Origin of Ribera del Júcar is located in the province of Cuenca, near central Spain. It gets its name from the Júcar river, since it passes through the region. This area has been home to winemaking for centuries. The climate is Mediterranean continental with sharp contrasts between summer and winter temperatures. The average temperature is 24°C in summer and 5°C in winter. Rainfall is sparse, around 350 mm/year.
WINEMAKING: Night harvested. Clarified with Bentonite. Physical filtration. Cold stabilization. No animal product used. Low Sulfite.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Ruth Fernandez Clasico opens with a very pleasing aroma of dark berry fruit, plum, cedar, vanilla, licorice and a nice array of baking spices among other touches. There is a lots to discover here but it is all very attractive and harmonious.
The wine tastes smooth, nicely tannic and juicy and features similar flavors to the nose. It’s a bit oaky at first pop and pour but that dissipates with some to breathe and it also has good structure and some nice ability to age. We enjoyed it quite a bit right now (As you can see by our 91-93 point score), but cellaring for a few years will probably be rewarded as well.
It ends dry, long and grippy and was just as good on day 2. This is a very nice blend with the Tempranillo of course leading the way, but I also love the addition of the indigenous Spanish grape Bobal which is having a well-deserved moment right now.
