The Best Garnacha Under $20 - The 2021 Reverse Wine Snob Picks!
Everybody knows that old vines tend to produce better wines, right? As the vines age, they produce less fruit, but those grapes are packed with flavor. Of course lower yields generally means higher prices which is not good for Reverse Wine Snobs. (Find more on old vines here!)
What if; however, there was a place where you could find a plentiful supply of old vines? And those vines were a variety that didn't command a premium in price? That place and variety is Spanish Garnacha, which is in our opinion one of the very best values in the wine world today.
Spain has more vineyard land than any other country, much of it very old. And much of it is in the form of Garnacha (known as Grenache elsewhere). Garnacha is a grape that doesn't get its due. Often relegated behind Tempranillo, it doesn't hold a ton of name recognition in this country. This is, of course, good for our purposes, as it makes fantastic wines. Some of our very highest rates wines come from places like the Calatayud and Carinena in Spain, are made from 60+ year old vines and somehow retail for $10 or less.
