The Best Syrah Under $20 - The Reverse Wine Snob Picks!
"If you were stranded on a desert island and could only drink one variety of wine for the rest of your life, what would it be?" An unlikely scenario for sure, but this is a question I've been asked many times. My answer, without a moment's hesitation, has always been Syrah. It is one of my very favorite varieties of wine - one of the reasons being its ability to be expressed in so many different styles.
The Syrah grape is probably most well known in the Northern Rhone region of France where it produces some of that country's most iconic wines. The variety is grown throughout the world; however, with excellent warm and cool climate examples throughout California and Washington. Chile, Australia, South Africa and even New Zealand are producing some great inexpensive examples of the variety as well.
One other note, while Syrah is technically the same grape as Shiraz, the name typically denotes a different style of wine (which we also love). Grown primarily in Australia, you can find all our recommended Shiraz picks here.
