Just like the previous vintage, the winery (Shannon Family Wines) labels this 13 Rams wine as a red blend even though it easily meets the requirements to be labeled as a single varietal Petite Sirah at 88% (plus 10% Sangiovese and 2% Zinfandel). We (happily) took it upon ourselves to investigate once again…
- 👀 Dark and inky in the glass, it certainly looks like Petite Sirah!
- 👃 Full of deep blackberry, black raspberry, spice, violets and much more, it smells like Petite Sirah!
- 👅 BIG, chewy and delicious in the mouth it certainly tastes like Petite Sirah too!
Not to say that savory Sangiovese an the splash on Zinfandel aren’t contributing as well, but this is an excellent example of Petite Sirah. In fact, it reminds me a lot of our very popular Stoke’s Ghost and Lost Chapters Petite Sirah deals, which is a very good thing.

2021 13 Rams Red
INSPIRATION: We consult the past in confronting today’s challenges, and early farming traditions inspire us to reinvent our agricultural approach. 13 Rams is a celebration of that knowledge and is a testimony to our conservation, regenerative farming efforts, and the 13 rams that propagate our flock of sheep.
VINTAGE: In 2021, we experienced mild spring weather and early blooms, followed by a heatwave from May to July. Despite the drought, our sheep helped retain soil moisture, resulting in an early harvest from August 12th to October 20th, producing small but highly concentrated berries. This vintage promises exceptional depth and intensity.
TASTING NOTES: This wine features dense, dark colors and a nose of black fruits balanced with oak notes. On the palate, it offers substantial weight and body, enveloping the palate with a long aftertaste, perfect for pairing with roast meat.

The 2021 13 Rams Red (Petite Sirah) begins with deep, pleasing aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, spice, violets and much more.
Featuring similar flavors to the nose with tons of depth and concentration on the fruit and a soft, smooth, silky mouthfeel, this is a big, balanced, chewy and deliciously dry wine. And while totally delicious now, it’s still a bit young and tannic at this point and will likely even get better from here so don’t be afraid to stock up.
It ends dry, very long and chewy. The whole thing was somehow even better on day 2 where we found it be even more aromatic and delicious.
