Airfield Estates Yakima Valley Merlot – Takeoff To Tasty

A nice example of one of our favorite varieties from Washington State, we review the Airfield Yakima Valley Merlot.

Airfield Yakima Valley Merlot - Takeoff To Tasty

Merlot from the Airfield Estate vineyard in the Yakima Valley of Washington State. The wine was aged in 100% French oak for around 17 months and is vegan friendly.

Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $20 and is available for as low as $17. Today we’re checking out another pick from Airfield Estates. After enjoying their Dauntless Red Blend, today we turn to the signature variety of Washington State – Merlot.

From the bottle:

Our family estate was selected as the site for a flight school during World War II due to its sunny days and fog free nights. Over time, we realized these qualities along with our glacier formed silt loam soils made for the ideal place to grow wine grapes. The first planting at Airfield Estates was in 1968, and we have been perfecting our craft ever since.

This Merlot preserves varietal character while achieving structural balance and elegance.

The 2022 Airfield Estates Yakima Valley Merlot opens with a pleasing aroma of red and black fruit, touches of spice and earth and perhaps just a hint of a meaty note. It’s a nice start.

Taking a sip reveals a nice example of Merlot. Smooth and round in the mouth, it also has some nice spice throughout. This is an easy to drink crowd-pleaser. Pair it with a cheeseburger off the grill.

It ends dry and a bit juicy and grippy on the long finish and was similar on day 2. Good stuff from the Yakima Valley!
