Cheap and just tasty enough, we review the California Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon from Aldi.
Cabernet Sauvignon from California.
Made by E. & J. Gallo, here isn’t much info available on the wine and I also can’t find a vintage anywhere on the bottle, but hey, it’s only 5 bucks so let’s check it out!
The California Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon sells for just $4.95 exclusively at Aldi.
From the bottle:
bold – smooth – dark
Aromas of fresh blackberry and cassis complemented with cocoa and vanilla. A delightful palate of juicy fruits with a velvety texture, finished with hints of caramel. Pairs well with rich meats, cheese and pastas.
Vinted and Bottled by International Wine Merchants
13% Alcohol
We rather enjoyed the California Heritage Sauvignon Blanc we reviewed a couple weeks ago, so today let’s try out the Cabernet. $4.95 is a pretty crazy price for Cab although to meet labeling laws it only has to have 75% Cabernet so it’s certainly possible there are some other varieties blended in.
The apparently non-vintage California Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon is a bit muted on the nose with not a lot going on. What’s there is some ripe, sweet-smelling fruit plus a bit of manufactured oaky spice. It’s not a great start.
Luckily the wine is better when tasting with some rich dark fruit and tons of vanilla and oaky spice notes. It still tastes a bit sweet and manufactured, but it actually does have some Cabernet character for just $5 so that’s pretty good for the extremely low price.
It ends mostly dry on the medium length finish and was similar on day 2. Despite only getting a Taste Rating of 6 (85-86 points) this one just squeaks by with a Recommended Buy rating thanks to the very low price. (You can find more on our rating system here.)
