Once again this wine drinks like a lot more than $8.

100% Garnacha from Calatayud, Spain.

SRP of $10 and purchased for $8.

From the bottle:

“who: a custom cuvee for Eric Solomon
what: 100% garnacha
when: vineyards planted up to 100 years ago
where: high altitude vineyards (2400-3000ft) in the mountainous village of Atea planted on pure slate soils
why: grenache this great usually goes for twice the price!
how: extract cork, pour in glass (optional), drink

15.0% Alcohol”

Today’s Bulk Buy is probably one of our most celebrated here at Reverse Wine Snob. This is the third vintage we have reviewed and now all three have been Bulk Buys. In fact, we loved these previous two vintages so much that they also ended up at the top of our Top 10 Red Wines Under $20 list.

The Evodia is another old vine Garnacha (up to 100 years old) from the Calatayud that proves once again this is THE go to region for Reverse Wine Snobs right now. This wine ages for only 5 months in stainless steel but don’t think for a second that makes it one dimensional or less complex than other wines from the area that spend time in oak. One taste will destroy that notion pretty quick. Speaking of tasting, let’s get to it.

The 2011 Altovinum Evodia Old Vines Garnacha begins with a lovely aroma featuring rich blackberry and blueberry fruit, cola, spice, licorice and pepper. Tasting this smooth and delicious wine reveals a ton of savory fruit and nice spice. It is also loaded with great mineral notes, more so than the previous couple of vintages. Just as in the past, the finish is long and spicy. My first thought after tasting this new vintage was simply that this wine is money as it once again drinks like a whole lot more than $8.
