We’ve been fans of the Sierra Foothills for years – it’s a fantastic spot for Reverse Wine Snobs to find value – so they’re preaching to the choir on this one, but the idea behind the name is to show that this area can produce world-class wines even though it doesn’t have the name recognition of areas like Napa.

Mission accomplished we say with this big, flavorful blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Andis Estate, Rancho Victoria and Brice Station vineyards, 13% Cabernet Franc from the Hawk Creek, Brice Station and Salman Farms vineyards, 7% Merlot from the Miraflores Vineyard and 3% Petit Verdot from the Bokisch Vineyard, which are all between 1,500 to 3,200 feet of elevation in the Sierra Foothills AVA.

The wine is then aged 14 months in 25% new French oak. Immensely flavorful with tons of ripe, jammy tasting fruit this is nevertheless a very dry wine with less than 1 g/L of residual sugar and we love it. We give it a 9 Taste Rating (91-93 Points).

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Painted Fields Curse of Knowledge Red Blend from Andis Wines begins with a powerful and enticing aroma full of ripe dark fruit, plenty of licorice, violets, dried herbs, spice, cocoa, cola, cedar, mint and even more!

Tasting reveals a big, delicious wine with a smooth mouthfeel and great depth on the fantastic fruit. It features similar touches as the nose with lots of licorice, more spice, more dried herbs, more cocoa and more cola. This one slaps you in the face with the ripe, jammy tasting fruit when it is first popped open but it balances out as it has some time in the glass and all the other components play a bigger part. And despite all the sweet tasting fruit this is a very dry wine with less than a half of gram of sugar in the entire bottle!

It ends dry, ripe, juicy and grippy on the long finish and it was even better on day 2. What a treat! You don’t want to miss this one.
