Let’s take a look at the Syrah first. You will receive two bottles. This wine comes from the Sierra Foothills, a region that is quickly becoming ground zero for interesting and delicious wines in California. It is also home to several of our most popular deals from Andis and Scott Harvey Wines.

The 2018 Messenger Sierra Foothills Syrah #49 is 90% Syrah and 10% Tempranillo. Aged in medium toast French oak, 20% new and 80% neutral, it is vegan friendly.

From the winery:

Go big or go home. This is the Lizzo of Syrah: big and rich with talent as far as the eye can see. The Sierra Foothills has turned out to be “the place“ to grow Syrah in the US. The conditions are perfect to allow this grape to ripen to perfection and the soil to add complexity and richness. This natural wonder has a little Tempranillo taking the wine to new heights of delicious.

Wine Grapes were introduced to the Sierra Foothills during the 19th century gold rush. What has evolved is a delightful eclectic collection of vineyards, dominated by growers who farm with old fashioned sensitivity for the land and environment.

The 2018 The Messenger Sierra Foothills Syrah 49 begins with wonderful aromas of ripe black cherry fruit, well integrated spice and touches of vanilla, chocolate, mint and sugar maple bacon. I love it!

Tasting reveals a full-bodied and delicious Syrah. All the flavors from the nose re-appear when tasting along with some added black pepper and cola. Featuring great balance and a very smooth and lively mouthfeel, this is just a pleasure to drink.

It finishes dry, a bit chewy and very long. Delicious right from the first pop and pour, it gets even better with time in the glass. And while it’s drinking wonderfully now, it should also have several years of peak drinking ahead of it.

This is a fantastic example of Syrah that does a mighty good impression of a wine at least twice it’s price.

Aged 24 months in a combination of new and old French oak barrels, this wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that shows off the deliciousness of these grapes coming from the acclaimed Kersbrook Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia.

From the winery:

Tasting Notes: The wine is intense as it opens with ripe mulberry, hints of mint & tobacco leaf with overtones of cedar, cinnamon, and allspice. The finish is long but welcoming as it builds with each new sip and the tannins soften.

Pairings: Braised lamb shank, grilled ribeye, fire roasted root vegetables, and rich blue cheeses.

Winemaking: Whole berries are destemmed and crushed very gently to increase the berry flavors in the resultant wine. The wine is aged for 24 months in 20% new French oak & 80% old French oak. This Cabernet Sauvignon will drink well through 2038.

The 2017 Amadio Adelaide Hills Single Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a complex and inviting aroma of black cherry and plum with cedar, mint, spice, cigar box and tobacco. There’s lots to sniff here as you swirl!

Taking a sip reveals a delicious Cab with rich flavors, well-integrated spice and a smooth, lush mouthfeel. This is very easy to drink yet also has a good amount of complexity with lovely layers of juicy fruit, spice and all those other touches from the nose plus some chocolate and licorice. Very cohesive and with great depth, this is really impressive at this price.

We drank it side by side with a fancy Mount Veeder Cab and I preferred this one, hands down! And it gets even better after it has a few hours of air.

It ends dry and quite long with very long lasting juicy fruit. This is extremely good, we give it a high 9 on our Taste Rating scale.

And finally, rounding out the Art+Farm Mixed Red 6-Pack we’ve got the big and meaty 2018 The Messenger Chara Red from the Shenandoah Valley, which is also in the Sierra Foothills. (There’s a reason they call it gold country!) You will receive two bottles.

‘Chara’ is the Greek word for ‘Joy,’ and this blend is clean, concise, and a joy to drink. Chara brings the rich fruit and earthy tones of Grenache together with a touch of Alpine freshness from Teraldego. A soft but expressive blend, Chara is a mainstay for years to come.

The warm days of the Shenandoah make this the perfect terroir for Grenache and Teraldego. Some of the world’s most expensive and celebrated wines are made from Grenache and it is easy to see why. Spicy, yet soft with notes of raspberry and white pepper linger and the trademark cinnamon are all present. The hint of pine is compliments of the Teraldego.

When these two grapes dance in your glass and across your tongue you will taste their perfect rhythm.

Pairings: Roasted cauliflower, toasted walnuts, rotisserie chicken, classic fondue with pork & chicken, goat cheese, and a richly flavored dashi Ramen.

It only takes one sniff of the 2018 The Messenger Shenandoah Valley Chara Red to know that this is one meaty Grenache! Filled with black pepper, dark berry fruit and nice touches of baking spice, wintergreen and pine tree, this is a pleasing and quite intriguing aroma.

Taking a sip reveals a full-bodied and grippy wine with tons of meaty notes in the mouth. It tastes pretty similar to the nose with a bit more spice and the addition of some cola notes. This is quite an interesting blend and it gets even better and gains more balance as it has more air.

It ends dry, quite long and grippy with some lasting earthy minerality underneath. It was similar on day 2. What a trio of wines!
