Today we’re happy to welcome Broken Earth Winery to our Insider Deals. We love wine from Paso Robles and the history behind the estate vineyard that this wine comes from is quite fascinating.
Started in 1973, the founders (which included some big names from Hollywood) were some of the first to see the true potential of Paso Robles as well as to embrace the sustainability movement:
In 1973, Wayne Rodgers (Mash), James Caan (Godfather), Peter Faulk (Columbo), Jack Webb (Dragnet) and local visionary Herman Schwartz established our vineyard to be the first large scale vineyard on the Central Coast, planting 520 acres. They anticipated the growth of Paso Robles to be another 2,000 acres with 10-15 wineries over the long-term. Paso Robles now stands around 70,000 acres under vine, and over 300 wineries.
Farmers for generations have cultivated or “broken” soil in the region with care and respect. Vineyard pioneer Herman Schwartz embraced sustainable farming techniques as they were first coming on to the scene in the early 1980s. Our goal is to continue that tradition by respecting the land and its treasures.

With over 18 acres, our Syrah block on our vineyard is often used in our Rhone-style blends, but is delicious as a single varietal. On our vineyard, we practice sustainable farming and believe that attention to the soil’s health is critical to growing great wines.
The fruit was machine harvested, destemmed, and crushed to fermenters. Untoasted French oak fermentation ‘rice’ was added to assist color and flavor extraction. The wine was fermented for 11 days on skins to ensure complete extraction of sugars and anthocyanins. When pressed off the skins, the wine was stored to ferment in tank with French oak adjuncts for over 6 months, added to enhance flavor and complexity.
As a full-bodied red, the palate is greeted by a punch of dark berry flavors with hints of pepper and oak notes. Pair with foods like blue-cheese burgers all things BBQ.

The 2016 Broken Earth Winery Limited Release Paso Robles Syrah opens with a pretty classic Syrah aroma full of dark berry fruit, some spice, some black pepper, some leather and a bit of a smoky, meaty note. It’s a very nice start.
Taking a sip reveals a pleasing example of Syrah that has aged quite nicely. Smooth, balanced and with similar flavors to the nose, we enjoyed this one a lot. The screwcap has kept it quite fresh and I’d guess it still has another 3-5 years of peak drinking. It’s also quite food friendly.
It ends dry, long and satisfying with a lingering smokiness. It was just as good on day 2. At this price and this quality, there’s no reason not to stock up if you’re lucky enough to live in one of the somewhat limited ship states.
