Caldora Montepulciano d’Abruzzo – Respectable

A very easy to drink example of the variety, we review the Caldora Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

Caldora Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - Respectable

100% Montepulciano from vineyards in Chieti in the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC of Italy. The wine spends a minimum of 9 months in oak barrels before being bottled and is vegan friendly.

Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $15 and is available for as low as $12. It is imported by Gonzalez Byass USA.

From the winery:

The grapes for the production of Caldora Montepulciano are sourced from Chieti. All grapes are hand harvested with manual selection of the best bunches when they arrive to the winery. The grapes undergo delicate crushing and de-stemming and pre-fermentative maceration in order to extract color and some tannins.

This 100% Montepulciano is ruby red with a garnet rim. Intense, persistent and fruity (red fruits, plum) with hints of vanilla. On the palate full-bodied, tannic and well balanced, intense and persistent.

Best served with salami, rich dishes, meat and cheese.

13% Alcohol

The 2020 Caldora Montepulciano d’Abruzzo opens with a pleasing aroma of dark fruit (mostly blackberry and plum) plus some spice notes.

Tasting the smooth, soft wine reveals similar flavors to the nose along with good balance. This is a tasty, easy-drinking example of the variety. I really can’t say that there’s anything remarkable about it, it just all works.

It ends dry and moderately long.
