A top of the line wine from the Famiglia Cecchi in Tuscany, we review the Cecchi Coevo, a Saturday Splurge selection.
50% Sangiovese from the Ribaldoni vineyard at Villa Rosa in Castellina in the Chianti Classico zone plus 50% Merlot from Poggio La Mozza, part of the Val delle Rose Estate in Maremma, Tuscany, Italy. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak tonneaux and an additional 10 months in the bottle before release. Just 3,108 bottles were produced.
Sample submitted for review. When we say big-time splurge, we mean it on this wine as it has a listed SRP of $120! Past vintages have been available closer to $70.
From the winery:
The winter was mild and peppered with rainfall until at least the end of March, with soil water reserves replenished. Sprouting occurred in the first weeks of April, with a subsequent slowdown in the growing cycle due to the generally cool weather.
May and June were characterized by frequent rains that accompanied regular flowering and fruit set. June opened the door to the summer season, which was essentially dry at least until the end of August, when some rains initiated a very good and slow ripening of the grapes. September and October, when the harvest of the two varieties took place, were sunny and warm with cool nights: ideal days to be able to plan a “tailor-made” harvest for Coevo’s grapes.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Cecchi Coevo opens with a savory, harmonious aroma of dark fruit, spice, a little licorice, leather, cedar and more especially as you give it some time and swirl it in your glass. It’s a fantastic start!
The wine tastes just as good and harmonious in the mouth featuring all of the same flavors with juicy fruit and great depth and complexity. This is uber-delicious.
It ends incredibly long, juicy, dusty and just a bit grippy and was just as good on day 2. It’s definitely expensive but it sure is good. We don’t say this often with wines at this price point, but splurge away!
Cheers,
Jon
