If you’re not familiar with Gruet Winery in New Mexico (yes – New Mexico!) here’s the incredible story of how it came to be almost 40 years ago:
Gilbert Gruet, founder of Gruet Winery, was born in Bethon, France in 1931. He grew up in a poor family, and began working at a young age. In 1952, Gilbert Gruet, along with his wife Danielle, dreamt of producing fine quality Champagne. Gilbert followed his heart and in 1967 created the U.V.C.B. (Union Vinicole des Coteaux de Bethon), a co-op in the village of Bethon.
In 1983, the Gruet Family was traveling through the southwestern part of the US, and while in New Mexico met a group of European winemakers who had successfully planted vineyards in Engle, near the town of Truth or Consequences, 170 miles south of the city of Albuquerque. After hearing of vineyards planted there as early as the 1600s, and learning about the specific climate and soil conditions of the region, the Gruet Family knew they had found what they were looking for. In 1984, Gilbert Gruet – whose Champagne house (Gruet et Fils) has produced fine Champagnes in Bethon, France since 1952 – made the decision to plant an experimental vineyard in Engle, NM. The plantings were exclusively Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Two of his four children, Laurent and Nathalie Gruet then relocated to New Mexico to begin their American winemaking adventure.
And when we say the same quality as Champagne, we mean it. The Gruet Brut is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir from New Mexico and is Aged en Tirage (in the bottle on the yeast before being disgorged and sold) for a minimum of 18 months. This aging time, which is very expensive, allows the flavors to more fully develop in the wine. The wine has residual sugar of 8 g/L. You will receive 3 bottles in today’s 6-pack.

Brut NV was our first wine released in 1989. As the predominant grape used in Champagne, we wanted our first sparkling wine “to express the finesse of Chardonnay.” -Laurent Gruet
Wonderful aromas of green apple and citrus mineral notes make for a delightful start to this traditional sparkler. Our Brut NV offers bright, crisp acidity complemented by a touch of yeast on the delightfully long finish. A classic house style!

And now on to our review:
The Gruet Brut opens with a wonderful aroma of apples plus touches of citrus, tropical fruits, cinnamon and even a hint of fresh made tortillas. It’s a great start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be crisp, bubbly and absolutely delightful. The fruit it similar to the nose, but a bit ripe and tangy in the mouth. There’s also some added tart lime along with just about the perfect amount of sweetness to balance things out.
It ends clean, crisp, long, juicy and lip-smacking. This is wonderful!
The Gruet Blanc de Noirs is 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay from New Mexico that is Aged en Tirage for a minimum of 18 months. It also has just 8 g/L of residual sugar. You will receive 3 bottles in today’s 6-pack.

French for “white of black”, Blanc de Noirs describes a sparkling wine made from Pinot Noir grapes that are gently pressed and its juice runs off the skins. Our Blanc de Noirs NV was first released in 1990. Following the success of our Brut release, we wanted to add a non vintage wine using Pinot Noir, similar to the classic blends of NV Champagnes.
Pale salmon in color, this full-bodied wine has a fine mousse and a creamy, rich texture. Complex aromas and flavors of raspberry, baked pear and cherry are complemented by a hint of toasted vanilla. The balance of fruit, minerals and crisp acidity lead to a round mouthfeel and lasting finish.

The Gruet Blanc de Noirs opens with a wonderfully enticing aroma of apples with hints of red fruits followed by pear and cinnamon notes plus a bit of fresh baked bread. It’s a near perfect start.
The wine tastes crisp, bubbly and yeasty – yum! This is an absolutely delicious sparkler. Featuring rich fruit, just the right amount of bubbles and great balance, this is highly refreshing. We love Blanc de Noirs and this is a great example.
It ends dry, crisp, long and refreshing. This is everything you want in a sparkling wine at a fraction of the price of Champagne!
