What a wine we have today! Let’s start with the grapes, which come from what is thought to be one of the oldest vineyards in Napa Valley. The Block House Vineyard in Yountville, Napa Valley was originally planted in 1836 by George C. Yount. Farmed organically, the grapes grown here are truly something special.

The winemaking is equally as good:

The grapes were picked by hand, fermented 25% whole cluster & 75% destemmed without crushing, and cold soaked for 7 days. We fermented each lot in small open-top tanks, punch-down by hand, and aged in French Oak barrels. This wine is not fined or filtered.

Our organic practices don’t stop when the grapes get to the winery – our wines are made naturally with no synthetic nutrients or additives, no GMO’s, are vegan and contain low sulfites.

The owners/winemakers of Horse & Plow are Chris Condos from our popular Vinum Cellars deals along with Suzanne Hagins. We had the chance to taste through a number of their wines recently and the thing that stood our were the absolutely wonderfully smooth mouthfeels and layered textures in every wine we tasted. Horse & Plow is a small, family run winery based in Sebastopol, California. This special area, in the heart of the Russian River Valley, is ideal for producing high quality fruit that, makes unique and delicious wine. In addition, we source grapes from our neighbors in Mendocino and Napa counties, allowing for even more variety from ideal sites. We utilize organic farming methods, small lot fermentations and traditional techniques to make balanced, food friendly and site specific wines. We work exclusively with growers who are committed to superior quality by using certified organic and/ or biodynamic techniques. These sustainable practices allow us to craft wines with greater complexity and sense of place, while caring for worker health and the environment.

This Grenache comes from the historic Block House Vineyard in Yountville. Brimming with juicy, red fruit and spice, its silky texture drinks beautifully on its own and pairs with a wide range of foods.

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Horse & Plow Block House Vineyard Napa Valley Grenache begins with a beautiful bounty of strawberry, licorice, cinnamon and other baking spice plus plenty of floral notes. I absolutely love it!

The wine explodes with juicy fruit when tasting but also features all those same touches from the nose. This is just a beautiful Grenache with a smooth, round, mouth-filling texture, wonderfully well integrated spice and fantastic secondary touches throughout. And as good as it is on its own, it is also extremely food friendly.

It ends dry, a bit grippy, very long and very satisfying. It gets even better with couple hours of air and was just as good on day 2! Did I mention I love it?
