The thick-skinned Semillon grape is behind some of the most renowned white wines (both dry and sweet) in the world. In fact, some of the dry examples are extremely cellar worthy and can age for decades.
Today we have a dry example (just 2.04 g/L of residual sugar) that comes from the Maule Valley in Chile. It’s a great chance to try Semillon on its own, as it is often found blended with Sauvignon Blanc.
This variety has been grown in in Chile since the 1800s, at one point being the most widespread variety planted there. Today, it thrives in the Maule Valley thanks in part to the large diurnal shift (temperature difference between day and night) that helps to retain acidity.
Sourced from small family growers, handpicked and fermented in stainless steel with a small portion of the wine spending time in 2nd and 3rd use French oak barrels, this wine normally retails for a reasonable $25. For the next day we’re cutting that price almost in half…

Semillón typically shows refreshingly, but moderate acidity and a full-bodied texture that can be delightfully silky. The flavors range from fresh apple and citrus when young, evolving into richer flavors of honey, figs, and toasted nuts with age.
History and Winemaking: Semillón is a variety that has existed in Chile since the arrival of the Bordeaux varieties in the mid-1800s. It remains in the traditional wine-growing area of the Maule Valley. Known for old vines with great potential and expression of the Chilean terroir, there is a special cultural bond with the small grape growers and their communities. The grapes are hand-picked by committed vintners and their families. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a low and controlled temperature. Then, for 3 months, careful work is done with the fine lees, adding more intense aromas to the wine as well as greater texture in the mouth. A small component of wine that has passed through second and third use French barrels is added to the wine.

And now on to our review:
The 2023 Manos Andinas Gran Reserva Semillon opens with a fresh, very pleasing aroma of citrus plus a little tropical fruit, honeysuckle and even a bit of a nice nutty note. It’s a great start.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, medium to full-bodied wine with a round, pleasing texture. Balanced and with good acidity and similar flavors to the nose, this is really quite tasty and pleasing.
It ends dry and with good length on the satisfying finish. It’s quite good now, but it would also be interesting to tuck a bottle away for a few years and see what happens.
