Welcome to version 4 of our extremely popular Insider Deal All-Stars Red Wine Intro Pack! SAVE OVER 55% on four bottles of our highest rated, best-selling, most requested wines from our most popular wineries while you can!
SOLD OUT! Stay tuned for the next one…
We’re delighted to be back with another Insider Deal All-Star Intro Pack. Our previous Red Wine Intro Packs and “Perfect 10” Packs were very popular but are now sold out. Our latest White and Rosé Intro Pack is still going strong as well as our Mixed Intro Pack, but due to overwhelming demand, we’ve also decided to launch the 2025 edition of the Red Intro Pack early!
As a refresher, these collections are designed to introduce you to some of our best-selling wineries, allowing you to try some of the very best wines we’ve offered, all in one deal. And the 2025 edition is jam-packed with value! All 4 wines are Bulk Buy Rated and two of the wines have Perfect 10 Taste Ratings.
Here’s what the 2025 edition of the All-Star Red 4-Pack includes:
- 1 bottle of perhaps our most talked about deal – the 92-93 point 2022 Son of a Butcher Tannat-based red blend from the French Tannat Master himself, Y Rousseau. Aged for 20 months in 25% new French oak barrels, this deep, dark and delicious blend offers insane value.
- 1 bottle of the $45 estate 2019 Desert Wind Heritage Series Merlot, a beautiful, smooth, juicy, dusty example of the variety from the Wahluke Slope. Aged 19 months in neutral French oak, only 325 cases were produced. We give it a Perfect 10, 94+ point, rating.
- 1 bottle of the $35 2018 Twisted Oak Tempranillo from the Sierra Foothills of California. We score this savory Tempranillo, that is both true to the variety and has a little age on it (can you say Rioja?), at 92-93 points. Just 290 cases were produced, so you are in for a special treat! [Please note this wine replaces the 2018 YNOT Pinot Noir which was previously in this 4-pack. Scroll to the very bottom of this post if you are looking for those tasting notes.]
- And finally, the definition of an Autobuy – a Scott Harvey Zinfandel! With plenty of big scores, including 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, the 2021 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel is one of our very favorite wines. You don’t want to miss Scott’s 45+ years of experience making excellent wine in Amador County. You will receive 1 bottle.

Let’s take a look at each wine.
Up first we’ve got the aptly named Y Rousseau 2022 Son of a Butcher (SOB) Red Blend. Comprised of 40% Tannat, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 5% Malbec, it is aged for 20 months in 25% new and 75% second and third fill French oak barrels. It’s aptly named not only because it goes great with meat but also because Yannick’s father, pictured on the label, was in fact a butcher in France. You will receive one bottle in this 4-pack.
From the winery:
STORY: French winemaker Yannick Rousseau’s love affair with wine began at age five with his first glass of watered-down wine made by his grandpa, Pépé. Pépé was an Artisan Butcher, he also hunted his own food, and made his own wine. Yannick has fond memories of long dinners with many laughs and heated discussions accompanied by simple, delicious dishes and good, unpretentious wines. Yannick’s Dad was also an Artisan Butcher. ‘Son Of a Butcher’ Red Blend is a salute to his French heritage and a “homage” to the easy-going way of life in the South-West of France. Open a bottle any day of the week and enjoy the warmth of family and friends, and the delights of an everyday meal. Pépé and Yannick’s Dad (pictured above on the label in front of the family’s butcher shop) would approve!
VINTAGE: 2022 was a challenging vintage for Northern California because we had heat waves in June, July and early September; but, because we source our grapes from premium & well managed vineyards, we were able to preserve the high quality of the grapes and pick them at the perfect window. SOB shows the softer side of Yannick’s favorite red grape – Tannat – and its amazing potential as a blending variety.
TASTING NOTES:
Color: Deep and vibrant black cherry.
Nose: Bright, deep, full, generous, elegant and complex with notes of blackberries, baked blueberry pie, cassis, dry herbs, spices, black olives and delicate French oak.
Mouthfeel: Supple entrance leading to juicy mid-palate, full-bodied, good structure, offering sweet spices, cocoa powder, blackberries, silky tannins, great balance and fresh long finish. It’s an unmistakable California “resident”, rich, juicy and with youthful vibe, but the one who doesn’t forget its French heritage and its “je ne sais quoi”.
PAIRING: Think of a delicious meat lasagna, pork chop, a steaming bowl of chili, meatloaf, eggplant parmesan or “tout simplement” a juicy hamburger to pair with the wine.
BLEND & AGING: Blend of 40% Tannat, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma & Napa), 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 5% Malbec. Aged for 20 months in 25% new and 75% second & third fill French oak barrels.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Y Rousseau Son of a Butcher Red Blend begins with a wonderfully attractive aroma of blackberry, black cherry, sage, mint and other assorted spices and dried herbs plus touches of coffee and vanilla. This wine is still fairly young at this point, so it just keeps getting better and more expressive the more it breathes.
The wine tastes lovely, lovely, lovely! This is a delicious, nicely tannic, full-bodied blend anchored by the Tannat we know you love. Big and spicy, this is fun to drink and just as you would expect, is made to paired with a big, juicy steak. It also features a smooth and velvety mouthfeel, lots of ripe and juicy dark fruit, plenty of spice and chewy tannins that lead into the dry, incredibly long, dynamic finish. Yum!
It’s maybe not quite as complex as the varietal Tannat we have also offered but I have to say that we like this one just about as much, and it costs a lot less too. We especially love that the percentages of the Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc have been increased this vintage and they all show their strong influence beautifully. We’ll put this one at the top end of 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).
This is one good SOB!

Up next, we’ve got the 2019 Desert Wind Heritage Series Merlot, a special bottling of Merlot (75%) from two of the best blocks in the vineyard that also includes 15% Syrah, 9% Carménère and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged 19 months in neutral French oak and only 325 cases were produced. You will receive one bottle.
From the winery:
WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2019 growing season started off slow due to winter storms that lasted into February, but consistently warm and sunny days in the summer put growth back on track. The overall heat accumulation remained just above average for Washington. Overall, the 2019 vintage showcased a fairly typical vintage in the area, which is a good sign for the consistency and quality of the resulting wines. The Heritage Series Merlot is made from two of our best blocks in our estate vineyard, which we believe best show a unique expression of Merlot in Washington. The grapes were harvested in October and fermented in open top bins, then aged for 19 months in neutral French oak barrels.
VINEYARD NOTES: The Wahluke Slope AVA is located in south-central Washington and is considered one of the warmer regions in the state. Our 480 acre Desert Wind Estate Vineyard is south-facing, with a gradual two percent slope ranging from 800 to 1,000 feet in elevation. The deep, rocky soil allows for excellent drainage, stressing the vines and allowing focused energy on fruit production. The resulting wines are highly pigmented and have excellent tannin structure.
TASTING NOTES: Plum confiture, dark cherry marmalade, and cinnamon stick. Swirling brings orange peel and baked apples. The mouthfeel is very round and almost sweet, with beautiful texture, fine tannins, and pleasant acidity. Flavors of black licorice and baking spice come along with a very juicy palate. A beautiful expression of Merlot from a warm site that you can enjoy now or in the next 10 years.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Desert Wind Heritage Series Merlot opens with a very harmonious and inviting aroma of dark berry fruit, beautiful baking spice, a little licorice and touches of graphite.
Tasting reveals the wine to be beautifully smooth, round and mouth-filling. It features similar flavors to the nose with great depth on the beautiful, juicy fruit. And it gets even better as it has more air.
Dusty tannins lead into the dry, long, juicy, grippy and satisfying finish. It was just as good on day 2. Excellent! This is a wonderful example of Merlot from one of the very best spots for it.

The third wine in the 2025 All-Stars Red Intro Pack is the 2018 Twisted Oak Sierra Foothills Tempranillo. You will receive one bottle.
From the winery:
Tempranillo! The grape that made Calaveras County famous!
Tempranillo! Ten years ago you couldn’t even say “Tem-prah-NEE-yoh” and now, you – ladies and gentlemen – from what was only an inarticulate mass of Cab-swirling tissue, I give you a Cultured, Sophisticated Tempranillo lover about town!

And now on to our review:
The 2018 Twisted Oak Sierra Foothills Tempranillo opens with an attractive aroma of black cherry, spice and balsamic plus a little vanilla and licorice, a bit of leather and lots of other secondary touches that come from a wine with some age on it.
Taking a sip reveals a balanced, smooth and savory wine with similar flavors to the nose. It does need a little time to open up but then it’s really delicious. This is lovely stuff!
It ends dry, long and a bit grippy on the finish. This is a savory example of Tempranillo staying quite true to the variety. It was just as good on day 2.
Rounding out this 4-pack we have the 2021 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel which comes from vineyards in the higher elevations of Shenandoah Valley in Amador County. Specifically, that breaks down to 53% Bowman Vineyard and 47% Renwood Vineyard. 100% Zinfandel, the wine is aged 21 months in French oak and has just 2 g/L of residual sugar. You will receive one bottle.
From the winery:
Vineyard/Vintage Notes: Amador County is extremely well suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. These old head pruned dryland farmed vineyards produce low yields of extractive flavorful Zinfandel.
Winemaker’s Notes: Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. There was a big fire starting just before harvest began lasting into mid harvest (Caldor Fire). It started 10 miles northeast of us and burned in the opposite direction. So, all our 2021 wines escaped having any smoke taint. Lower yields of extractive fruit due to drought. No heat spikes during the growing season. Just a dry year with little moisture in the ground. Look for dark colored extractive wines, but not a lot of them.
Tasting Notes: Dark briary fruit of mulberry, white pepper, cigar box, ripe strawberry, grilled steak, spicey, cherry tobacco, sage, and plum lead to an extractive fleshy structure with firm tannin and a balanced long lingering finish.
Blend: 100% Amador County Zinfandel

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel begins with a wonderful, big, very spicy aroma of black cherry, plum, black raspberry, lovely spice, licorice, a little cedar, a little vanilla and more. It’s quite inviting, and it gains even more complexity as it has time in the glass.
Tasting reveals plenty of spicy fruit and licorice to go along with candied cherry flavors in this balanced and delicious wine. This is a very dry wine with only 2 grams per liter of residual sugar, but it is nevertheless extremely flavorful.
It is also still rather young at this point so be sure to give it some time to breathe. Once you do you are rewarded with another excellent and age-worthy iteration of this wonderful wine.
It ends dry and slightly grippy with tons of lasting juicy fruit, licorice, spice and even a bit of lingering earthiness. It’s fantastic and it was even a bit better on day 2.
Cheers,
Jon

And now on to our review:
The 2018 YNOT Pinot Noir from Flying Goat Cellars opens with a complex, pleasing aroma of tart berry including a little cranberry, plus touches of forest floor, spice, black tea and more. It’s a nice start!
Tasting reveals this to be a pretty tasty rendition of Pinot Noir with lots of ripe, tart fruit but also other nice touches similar to the nose: spice, black tea, some herbal notes and more. Featuring good structure, acidity and complexity, this is quite pleasing to drink.
It ends dry, long and tart on the mouth-watering finish which also has a nice bit of grippiness. It was similar on day 2. This is very nice!
