100% Tannat
Only 146 cases produced.

VINEYARD: The vineyard is located in Shandon, a sub appellation of Paso Robles, CA. It is warmer than most of the other areas in Paso Robles.

WINEMAKING: 100% destemmed to stainless steel closed top fermenter. Pressed at dryness, aged in stainless for 6 months, then transferred to 4 year old barrels for another 4 months.

TASTING NOTES: Black plum, blueberry, peppered spice. Robust, full bodied, good acidity, well structured with some young, stiff tannin, but expected to soften with some time.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Bonny Doon Vineyard The Great Tannat begins with a lovely mélange of blackberry, plum and black pepper. It also has a wonderful touch of a minty, meaty note. It’s a fabulous start.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth, round and full of depth with lots of chewy tannins. Full bodied, it also has great structure, good acidity and wonderful touches of spice. It needs a lot of time to open up — we had this at a Taste Rating of 9 at first pop and pour, but it just kept on getting better all the way through day 2 where it was a solid 10. (I’d recommend opening the bottle the morning you want to drink it.)

It ends dry, quite grippy, juicy, dynamic and very, very long. It was even better on day 2. I love it and it’s still just a baby, so this one has plenty of life and further evolution ahead of it.
