Broken Earth is back with another excellent limited release wine, this one spending 17 months in mostly 3rd and 4th use oak.

Before we to get to that, let’s recap the fascinating history of the estate vineyard these wines come from. Started in 1973, the founders (which included some big names from Hollywood) were some of the first to see the true potential of Paso Robles as well as to embrace the sustainability movement:
In 1973, Wayne Rodgers (Mash), James Caan (Godfather), Peter Faulk (Columbo), Jack Webb (Dragnet) and local visionary Herman Schwartz established our vineyard to be the first large scale vineyard on the Central Coast, planting 520 acres. They anticipated the growth of Paso Robles to be another 2,000 acres with 10-15 wineries over the long-term. Paso Robles now stands around 70,000 acres under vine, and over 300 wineries.
Farmers for generations have cultivated or “broken” soil in the region with care and respect. Vineyard pioneer Herman Schwartz embraced sustainable farming techniques as they were first coming on to the scene in the early 1980s. Our goal is to continue that tradition by respecting the land and its treasures.

The Paso Robles AVA has emerged as the premier Rhone varietal region in the USA. The dry, warm conditions lend themselves to producing Rhone style wines of extraordinary depth and character and Grenache is certainly no exception.
Broken Earth Winery has enjoyed considerable success with our Estate Grown (and California Certified Sustainable) Grenache and we are proud to offer our latest vintage, the 2019. Harvested on 9/20/19 at 23.4 Brix it promised to be a wine that delivers outstanding flavour without an elevated alcohol level. At 13.79% it offers enough weight to the complex fruit without the presence of too much warmth on the palate.
The wine went to oak in March 2020 and remained there for almost 20 months. The barrels (barriques) were predominantly 3rd and 4th use, allowing for some gentle development without overpowering oak present.
Ripe red fruit drives this wine. Look for strawberry, raspberry and mulberry which lead into a mouth-filling experience, very nicely balanced with finer oak and skin tannins. On the palate it appears softer but the ripe tannins lend a lift to the extended flavours on the back end. This is a wine that can be equally enjoyed on its own or at the dinner table.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Broken Earth Limited Release Grenache opens with a vibrant and very pleasing aroma full of fresh, ripe strawberry and other fruit plus a little spice and cedar. It’s a great start.
The smooth, medium-bodied wine tastes bright and fresh and is loaded with strawberry flavors. And while this is a very dry wine (virtually no residual sugar at all), it has lots of sweet tasting fruit. This is an excellent example of Grenache.
It ends dry and very long on the finish and was just as good if not even slightly better on day 2.
