While we tend to focus on wines under $25 at Reverse Wine Snob, that certainly doesn’t mean we dislike high end wine. In fact, we love a lot of it, we just don’t like the prices!
Learn more about our winery direct INSIDER DEALS here.Today we have a very high end wine that normally retails for $85 a bottle (yikes).
The $85 price isn’t unjustified as this wine does have quite a pedigree with multiple gold medals and acclaim including a Best of Class and Triple Gold designation at Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition in January 2025. We agree with those designations giving this smooth, deep and harmonious blend a Perfect 10 (94+ Point) Taste Rating.
A big part of that price is the expense that goes into making this Bordeaux-style blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot from vineyard sites in Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek, Sonoma Valley and Fountaingrove. The wine was aged for 2 years in barrel with 50% new French oak plus another 3 years in bottle before release.
The winery also does many (expensive) things many larger wineries won’t. Like working with each vineyard in pruning, canopy management, fruit selection and harvesting; delaying the start of fermentation to macerate the fruit for greater flavor; slow and controlled fermentation at lower temperatures and much more.
All of this, plus their very small production (the winery makes a total of about 40 barrels/1,000 cases of wine each year) adds up to that $85 price tag.
Well, for the next two days you can get X bottles of this absolutely delicious wine for the price of X!

From the Winery:
2018 Brue Skok Cellars Geography Lesson Sonoma Red
“Geography Lesson’, is where we showcase that Sonoma is closer to Bordeaux than Napa; in terms of terroir, soil diversity, micro-climates and remoteness. A blend of vineyards that we have been carefully curating. Putting together vineyard sites in Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Sonoma Valley and Fountaingrove. We extended the aging on this wine to get it closer to providing its message to you in the glass and on the palate. Layers and complexity in this wine showcases savory black fruits, dried herbs, pottery clay and a lingering warm finish. It is very food friendly and long-lasting. Wonderful charcuterie, cheese, meats, nibbles wine; to pairing with complex, multi-coursed meals.

And now on to our review:
The 2018 Brue Skok Cellars Geography Lesson Sonoma Red opens with a succulent aroma of dark berry fruit with wonderfully integrated touches of baking spice, vanilla, cedar, licorice and more. It’s a really lovely start!
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, deep and very tasty blend featuring a super harmonious combination of the same flavors from the nose, in a lovely, layered fashion. It also has great structure, complexity and balance with plenty of acidity and juicy fruit flavors.
It ends dry, grippy and very, very long and savory. It was just as good on day 2.
This is a fantastic blend. I love that the winery took the time to let it develop in barrel and bottle until it was really shining. Built to age, it has plenty of life left ahead of it as well.
Cheers,
Jon
