These extremely small production beauties are made by Denier-Handal Wines. The winemakers include Dick Handal, Lucas Meeker (who you may recognize from one of our previous perfect 10, highly popular deals, the Meeker ZSM) and David Noyes who worked with the famed Peter Wellington.

The 100% Cabernet comes from a vineyard on the western bench of Dry Creek Valley that used to owned by the winery. (It was also a source for Peter Wellington’s wines.) Aged in new and 2-year-old French oak barrels for 19 months, it has almost no residual sugar (less than 1 g/L). A Gold Medal Winner at the 2025 Sonoma County Harvest Fair, we give it a Perfect 10 (94+ point rating.) You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

The old vine Zinfandel comes from the Rotta Winery vineyard established in 1908 in the Willow Creek District in Paso Robles and spends 24 months in 2-year-old French and American oak barrels. It has almost no residual sugar (less than 1 g/L). We rate it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

From the winery:

Tasting Notes: Zinfandel from Paso Robles is known for its full-bodied flavors, with notes of black cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, and pepper. The wines tend to be high in alcohol and have a sweet, jammy character with a good balance of tannins. The finish is usually long and spicy, making it a great match for dishes like brisket and BBQ as well as Asian-influenced dishes.

The Vineyard: This vintage of Zinfandel is a departure for us from years of making wine with fruit from Dry Creek Valley. In 2020, due to the fires in Sonoma County, we were unable to harvest fruit from the vineyard we had previously bought fruit from. We were fortunate to have been introduced to the Rotta Winery and its old vines. The vineyard sits on the valley floor and boasts sandy soil, cooler mornings and nights, and warm days.

And now on to our review:

The 2020 Denier-Handal Paso Robles Zinfandel begins with a classic Zin-like aroma of red and black cherry, licorice, balsamic, a little baking spice and a touch of cigar box. It’s a great start.

Tasting reveals a smooth, rich, delicious Zin. It does need some time to properly open up, so don’t be afraid to open it several hours before you want to consume it. It features similar flavors to the nose with great depth, well-integrated spice and a touch of vanilla.

It ends dry, a bit grippy and very long with lasting spicy fruit and was even better on day 2. This is lovely!

2018 Denier-Handal Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County

Tasting Notes: If you grow good fruit then your wine will be delicious. The winemaker helps the fruit speak but is not the storyteller. Cabernet from this small Dry Creek Valley vineyard is a delicious example of why it’s good to care for and nurture your grapes to perfect ripeness.

This wine has aged well and the flavors are just now, six years later, truly shining. Deep luscious black fruits shine alongside hints of cocoa, and spices including black pepper and tobacco. This is a deep rich velvety wine that has aged quite well. Enjoy it with roast meats, hearty vegetable dishes, and full-flavored aged cheeses.

And now on to our review:

The 2018 Denier-Handal Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a lovely aroma of black cherry, a little spice and balsamic plus some black pepper, cigar box and more. Everything has integrated wonderfully and harmoniously with age. It’s a fantastic start.

It’s not often you can get a wine this good already aged to perfection! Featuring similar flavors to nose, this is smooth, juicy and extremely delicious.

It ends dry, very long and grippy on the still vibrant finish with lots of complex, lingering notes. It was just as good on day 2.
