2021 Desert Wind Mourvèdre

WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2021 growing season was one of the warmest we’ve had in recent years. With close to 40 days over 100 degrees and very little rainfall all summer, it was certainly a difficult year for grapes. Yields were down between 10-30% in most areas, but what we did get was unmatched in quality. We ended the harvest about two weeks sooner than average due to the high temperatures, and overall, our first harvest under new ownership and with our new winemaking team went by smoothly. We are so pleased with the direction Desert Wind is heading, with an increase in quality, value, and varietal and terroir expression that is evident with the 2021 vintage and beyond. The 2021 Mourvedre is the first 100% varietal Mourvedre we’ve done at Desert Wind. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel and aged in new and neutral oak.

VINEYARD NOTES: The Wahluke Slope AVA is located in south-central Washington and is considered one of the warmer regions in the state. Our 480 acre Desert Wind Estate Vineyard is south-facing, with a gradual two percent slope ranging from 800 to 1,000 feet in elevation. The deep, rocky soil allows for excellent drainage, stressing the vines and allowing focused energy on fruit production. The resulting wines are highly pigmented and have excellent tannin structure.

TASTING NOTES: Medium red. Blackberry jam, black currant, thyme, black pepper, and hints of cherry liqueur and orange skin. The mouthfeel is savory and herbaceous, with tons of juicy red and black fruits. The wine finishes long and spicy, with nice acidity and hints of oak. Drink now or in the next 10 years.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Desert Wind Mourvèdre opens with an inviting aroma of dark fruit, cinnamon and other baking spice, black pepper and dried herbal notes plus a little licorice, cigar box and other assorted oaky notes. It’s a fantastic start and it just keeps getting better the more time it has to breathe.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be beautifully textured with juicy fruit and lots of depth and concentration. It has a bit of tannic grip but it’s not over the top. It features all the same flavors as the nose. Complex and delicious, this is an absolutely delightful example of Mourvedre.

It ends dry, a bit grippy and very long and lasting on the lovely finish. And by day 2 it was even a bit more savory and even longer on the finish. It also paired divinely with spicy dark chocolate.

Like we said, with only 210 cases produced this deal is not likely to last long so don’t let this one get away!
