VINEYARDS: Built on an immense legacy and good-old-fashioned hard work, Foppiano has been producing wine since the estate was founded in 1896. Located just south of Healdsburg, the winery sits on 160 acres in the renowned Russian River Valley. Cool morning fog and warm summer days create an ideal microclimate for balanced grape growing. Today, the vineyards are planted with Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc on the warmer bench lands, and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the cooler blocks adjacent to the Russian River.

WINEMAKING: Gentle pumpover of the wine two times daily, being careful to get color and texture from the fermentation but not extract tannin. Left for 18 days on the skins, partial malolactic fermentation in tank and then barreled down. It aged in barrel – unracked, for 18 months. Not racking the wine allowed for good settling and light filtration before bottling.

TASTING NOTES: The aroma of our 2021 Zinfandel centers on red raspberry, jammed dark fruit, cinnamon spice and clove. Hints of sliced ripe plum, black tea and lavender oil adds to its complexity. Flavors of blueberry, elderberry, and cranberry are enhanced with oak spice and baking notes from the barrels. These flavors marry with soft tannins for a long and mouthwatering finish.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Foppiano Russian River Valley Zinfandel opens with a very pleasing aroma of dark berry fruit and baking spice including notes of cinnamon and sage plus touches of licorice. It’s a great start.

The wine tastes smooth, quite balanced and quite good! With similar flavors to the nose this a really pleasing example of a balanced and flavorful Zin.

It ends dry and a bit grippy and chewy on the long finish. Lovely! It’s just as good on day 2 but you’ll have a hard time making it last that long.
