Unfortunately, a lot of what passes for “old vine” these days, especially in Zinfandel, isn’t really that old.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there’s something unmistakable about grapes that come from truly old vines – whether it’s from the low yield of super concentrated fruit, the incredible depth of the root system or something else entirely, these wines have a personality and character that can’t be replicated.

The two bottles of Zinfandel in today’s fantastically delicious 4-pack comes from the dry-farmed Giannecchini Family Vineyard, which was planted sometime between 1910 and 1920, making it somewhere between 100 and 110-years-old. The wine then spends 20 months in 30% new French oak.

Rounding out this Italian centric offer is two bottles of the true to the variety and very age-worthy Lake County Barbera which spends 18 months in 25% new French oak.

Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend. Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10).

These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.

There’s something magical about head pruned, dry farmed, old vine zinfandel. The wines are bold, beautiful, dense and truly express the terroir.

We proudly offer this full-bodied Zinfandel with delicate floral overtones and distinct, dark fruit aromas. The palate boasts spicy plum notes with extended cherry flavors and a seemingly eternal finish.

Our Old Vine Zinfandel hails from the Talmage Benge region of Mendocino County. Previously farmed by four generations of the Giannecchini family, this vineyard – located in the Talmage Benge region of Mendocino County – was planted sometime between 1910 and 1920. The gravelly, loam soils and ideal climate contribute to the production of these ultra-premium wine grapes.

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Giannecchini Family Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel begins with a full, inviting aroma chocked with wonderful spicy dark berry fruit plus touches of licorice, leather, vanilla, espresso and much more.

Tasting reveals a rich and delicious full-bodied Zin that is very harmonious, balanced and full of the depth and nuance that only old vines can bring. In the mouth it features a smooth texture and all those same touches from the nose including the fantastic spicy dark fruit.

It ends wonderfully with a dry, grippy and very long finish. I’d give it an hour or two to breathe after opening for it to be at its best. It was just as good on day 2. Pair it with beef brisket slathered in barbecue sauce for a match made in heaven!

We proudly offer this medium-bodied, sophisticated wine, inspired by the rich, old-world heritage of this legendary local family. Silky and velvety in texture, vibrant flavors of ripe fruit and raspberries fill the palate. Complimented by a long-lasting, structured finish with subtle hints of oak. The acid draws a clear focused line across the palate reminiscent of the Old World, with firm tannins marking it Californian. It has aromas of cherries and red fruits surely to delight any meal.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Giannecchini Family Vineyard Lake County Barbera opens with cohesive, attractive notes of ripe, Sweet Tart like berries plus some baking spice and vanilla aromas. It’s a great start.

It just takes one sip to know this is a very nice, age-worthy example of Barbera. It features excellent balance plus that distinct Barbera sweet tasting berry and cherry fruit. Nicely tannic with excellent acidity and a bit of earthiness, there’s great structure in this dry wine.

It ends dry, long and grippy. It does need a bit of time to open up but then this is excellent. It was just as good on day 2. We’ll put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).
