Silky smooth, balanced and delicious, this is some darn good Pinot from the pioneering De Loach family, well known for their eponymous brand as well as their major part in getting the Russian River Valley recognized as its own AVA.
They’ve been growing grapes and making wine in this area since the 1970s, and their experience shows in the glass of this estate Pinot Noir.
Here’s a bit more about the winery:
After the sale of their acclaimed De Loach Vineyards in 2003 to French vintners Boisset Family Estates, Cecil and Christine continued to farm and make wines from the more than 148 acres of vineyard Russian River Valley – and moved on to their next winery project.
In 2003, they launched Hook & Ladder Winery on Olivet Road, just down the street from their original De Loach Vineyards. Named for Cecil’s 17-year career as a San Francisco firefighter, Hook & Ladder is helmed today by grandson Jason De Loach, an accomplished winemaker who joined the winery in 2006.
Hook & Ladder is an “estate” producer, specializing in small bottlings of Pinot Noir, “Old Vine” Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends sourced from the family’s sustainably-farmed vineyards in Russian River Valley and its sub-appellation, Chalk Hill. The winery also produces and sells estate-grown Olive Oil from trees grown at their Los Amigos Ranch.
These days, Cecil and Christine can often be found at the winery they founded, helping out in the office, cellar and occasionally in the tasting room, which is festooned with fire station t-shirts given to the winery by visiting firefighters from all around the world.

THE VINEYARDS: Cecil De Loach planted these delicate Pinot Noir vineyards in 1973 in the Russian River Valley. Located on the plains and gently rolling hills off Olivet Road in western Santa Rosa, this area provides an excellent medium for the coastal fog that blankets our fruit in the mornings and evenings. The cooling moisture facilitates a longer growing season in which Pinot Noir thrives.
THE WINEMAKING: We use old world techniques, whole berries, and whole clusters to make our Pinot Noir in small batches that we “punch-down” up to three times a day. After native yeast fermentation the wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 10 months to achieve optimum balance and complexity. These Pinot Noir grapes were harvested from multiple vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. Each barrel in the Estate Bottled program is handpicked/tasted through to meet our finest level quality.
THE WINE: This year’s Russian River Valley offering displays a deep maroon hue, with wafting orange peel, tart cherry, and hints of dusty dark chocolate. While notes of black cherry, rhubarb, and cinnamon fill the front palate, there is a well-structured finish of vanilla, coffee, and light elderberry.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Hook & Ladder Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir opens with a very enticing aroma of black cherry, cranberry and some wonderful spice plus a little leather, mint, forest floor and more. It’s a great start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be silky smooth with similar flavors to the nose and juicy fruit that is a bit tart in the mouth. This is very easy to drink but it also has really good depth, balance, structure and complexity.
It ends dry, long and delicious and it was just as good and even a bit smoother on day 2. I love this!
