Horse & Plow Winery is owned by Chris Condos and Suzanne Hagins. Together, we draw on our different backgrounds and talents to craft original wines from organic grapes. We started Horse & Plow in 2008 to merge the best of old and new world techniques and produce authentic, hand-crafted wines. Utilizing organic farming, small lot fermentations and traditional techniques we make balanced, food friendly and site specific wines. Our organic vineyards dot the North Coast of California; including Sonoma, Napa & Mendocino Counties. We work exclusively with growers who are committed to superior quality by using certified organic and/ or biodynamic techniques. These sustainable practices allow us to craft wines with greater complexity and sense of place, while caring for worker health and the environment. Organic doesn’t stop when the grapes get to the winery – our wines are made naturally with no synthetic nutrients or additives, no GMO’s, are vegan and contain low sulfites.

Made from certified organic grapes, these are truly small production wines with only 2 barrels produced of the Syrah and just 7 barrels of the rare, single varietal bottling of the Carignane.

Here’s a bit more about each wine:

The 2019 Syrah comes from the Certified organic and dry-farmed Canihan Vineyard in the cool climate Sonoma Coast AVA. 98% Syrah and 2% Viogner, the wine is aged in 100% French oak. Talk about exclusive, only 2 barrels were produced! It has an SRP of $38. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

The 2022 Carignane comes from the rocky clay and red volcanic soils of the Cox Vineyard on the hills of Mendocino near Ukiah. The Carignane here is believed to have been originally planted in 1920! 40% whole cluster fermented, the wine is aged in 100% French oak. Only 7 barrels were produced and the wine has an SRP of $32. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend. Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10).

These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.

Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. Let’s take a look at the Syrah first.

From the winery:

This Syrah comes from Canihan Vineyard, located in the cool AVA of the Sonoma Coast. The grapes were picked by hand, fermented with a little bit of Viognier and cold soaked for 7 days. Native fermented in small open-top tank, punch-down by hand, and aged in French Oak barrels. This wine is not fined or filtered. Enjoy!

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Horse & Plow Canihan Vineyard Syrah opens with a classic, cool climate Syrah aroma of dark fruit, floral notes and a little black pepper, leather and forest floor plus touches of smoked meat. It’s a very nice start!

Taking a sip of the wine shows it to be balanced, smooth, juicy and quite tasty with similar flavors as the nose.

Nice touches of well-integrated spice lead into the dry, long, spicy and even a bit savory and grippy finish. It was similar on day 2.

Up next, let’s take a look at the old vine Carignane.

From the winery:

This Old Vine Carignane comes from Cox Vineyard in Mendocino County. The grapes were picked by hand, destemmed 60% without crushing and left 40% whole cluster then cold soaked for 7 days. Native fermented in small open-top tank, punch-down by hand, and aged in French Oak barrels. This wine is not fined or filtered. Enjoy!

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Horse & Plow Cox Vineyard Old Vine Carignane opens with pleasing aromas of dark fruit, lots of cedar and touches of spice and vanilla. It’s a very nice start to this young wine.

Tasting the wine reveals a smooth, round mouthfeel with soft tannins and juicy fruit. Balanced and tasty, it features similar flavors to the nose although it is not as oaky in the mouth as it smells. This is really quite compelling!

It ends dry, long, soft and grippy and was similar on day 2. Don’t miss your chance to try this excellent single varietal example of Carignane.
