The 2021 Ovis Betsy’s Vineyard Petite Sirah is a full-bodied wine with a deep, dark hue and a nose rich in blackberries, blueberries, dark plums, violet, cocoa, and a hint of black pepper. It’s ideal for umami or fat-driven dishes like steak or stroganoff, it benefits from decanting and is best enjoyed at room temperature within the next five years.

INSPIRATION: Ovis (Latin for sheep) is a small lot of wine that pays homage to the flock of sheep that help control the cover crops and weeds in the vineyards. The sheep and the dedicated Great Pyrenees guard dogs are the foundation of Clay Shannon’s sustainable farming practices. His love of protecting mother earth creates fertile lands that produce this extraordinary wine that he and his family offer to you with pride.

VINTAGE: In 2021, we experienced mild spring weather and early blooms, followed by a heatwave from May to July. Despite the drought, our sheep helped retain soil moisture, resulting in an early harvest from August 12th to October 20th, producing small but highly concentrated berries. This vintage promises exceptional depth and intensity.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Ovis Betsy’s Vineyard Petite Sirah pours super dark and inky in the glass just like a good Petite Sirah should. The aroma is filled with blackberry, blueberry, violets, lots of baking spice plus notes of vanilla, chocolate, cedar, licorice and much more as you swirl and sniff. It’s a wonderful start!

Just like the 2019 we previously offered, it only takes one sip to know this is a fantastic Petite Sirah. It’s just delicious. Big, super deep, chewy and tannic but also super smooth, it’s filled with juicy fruit and has wonderful depth and complexity. And while it has plenty of aging potential (10+ years), it is almost irresistible now with great balance for how young it is.

It ends dry, very long, chewy and lasting and was just as good on day 2. I love this, it’s uber-delicious!
