Up first, let’s take a look at the 2021 Peachy Canyon Bailey Vineyard Zinfandel. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

From the winery:

All in all we had four separate picks from Bailey’s Organic Ranch. Each of these picks were treated differently and ultimately portions of all these different treatments were blended together in July of 2022 to make a vintage of Bailey that is incredibly pleasing to the tongue. Density and clean winemaking marries well with classic Bailey fruit and spice. The primary component of this bottling is a 5 ton stainless tank fermentation; by keeping this fermentation cool, some of the more classic elements of Bailey Zinfandel shine through. However, some native yeast bin fermentations, and several barrels of an adjacent yeast trial also add to the overall complexity of 2021 Bailey. After blending, the newly married wines were returned to roughly 40% new French Oak barriques, with the balance finding homes in Hungarian Oak puncheons. This wine was racked once more for bottling in March of 2023 along with much of our Spring Club Shipment, and then allowed 6 months of bottle age prior to its release.

TASTING NOTES: Red the color of blood and the color of love. This wine reeks of strawberries, cherries, and red fruits. Hints of nutmeg, Crème brûlée, almond blossoms and cherry-wood pull you in to taste. Gamey leather and Jomón ibérico, give way to blackberries, blueberries, sage and thyme – ahh there are the acorns. An intensely raspberry hued finish and supple yet grippy tannins evaporate and leave behind the ever so subtle white pepper that Bailey Zinfandel is known for.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery Bailey Zinfandel opens with lots of dark fruit and a bit of a brambly note, plus lots of baking spice, licorice, leather and everything else nice. Featuring tons of secondary touches like vanilla, eucalyptus and much more, this is a fantastic start.

Tasting reveals the wine to be pure Zin delight. With similar flavors to nose, wonderful balance, great depth, great structure and excellent complexity, this one has it all!

It ends dry and very long on the lip-smacking finish featuring lots of deep flavors that linger and linger. It was just as good on day 2.

Next we’ve got the 2021 Peachy Canyon Old Schoolhouse Vineyard Zinfandel. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

From the winery:

The logical completion of our FPS (UC Davis Foundation Plant Services) project – the heritage block at Old Schoolhouse was picked by row, keeping all of the FPS clones separate for their delivery to the winery. As a result of drought, only 4 clones provided enough fruit for a healthy ferment on their own. The remaining clones were separated into two fermentations- Dusi and Primitivo clones were paired as they are for Especial Zinfandel, the remaining 12 clones were fermented together. Additionally, the larger swath of Dupratt Zinfandel from the Old Schoolhouse Vineyard was tapped this year to help produce some 330 cases of finished wine. After separate malolactic fermentations in mostly once used French Oak barriques, the barrels for blending were racked and blended in in July 2022. While our path was different than in years passed, we did still end up with 18 clones of Zinfandel in Old Schoolhouse 2021. After blending, the resulting wine was aged until bottling in March of 2023 in 25% new French and Hungarian Oak. The balance (75%) was aged in once used French Oak barriques and twice used Hungarian Oak barriques.

TASTING NOTES: In a world where color and flavor are so often one and the same, a medium garnet hue with a wide, brilliant margin, betrays this aromatically complex wine. Jam packed with ripe strawberries and Bing cherries, hints of black olive, coffee, cacao, red tobacco, cloves, and wet granite entice the nose. Thick, Templeton-clay tannins support intense red currants, cherries and cranberries, and as the flavors move to the back of the palate, star-anise, cinnamon and Chinese five-spice compliment a long velvety finish.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery Old Schoolhouse Zinfandel begins with a very pleasing aroma of black cherry, strawberry, licorice, a little baking spice and maybe just a hint of earthiness. It’s another great start.

The wine tastes just as good in the mouth. It is smooth and full of deep flavors similar to the nose but eloquently balanced as well. This is a great example of Zinfandel.

It ends dry and a bit dusty on the extremely long finish of juicy fruit and spice. It was even slightly better on day 2. We put this one at the top end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).

And finally we’ve got the 2021 Peachy Canyon Especial Zinfandel. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

From the winery:

For the past three years we have blended estate grown, dry farmed, Dusi-clone and Primitivo-clone Zinfandels to make the blend of Especial which finds its way to the bottle. Unfortunately, at the end of a wonderful growing season in 2021, we lost between a third and a half of the (already drought lightened) block of Dusi-clone Zinfandel to pests. We accounted for those losses by trying to match the texture and flavor of our blend to that of our previous two vintages of Especial, though relying on vineyards outside of Mustang Springs Ranch means that this wine is not a vineyard designate. 2021 Especial is a combination of three vineyards: 56% from Mustang Springs Ranch, Dusi and Primitivo clone fruit was matched with second crop from our Cottage Block (Uberoth-clone) Zinfandel. A whole-cluster, carbonic fermentation of David Bailey’s Organic Zinfandel accounts for 19% of the blend. Heritage clones (#15 Teldeschi, #21 #22 & #24 Lytton Springs) grown at the Old Schoolhouse Vineyard and fermented independently account for the final 25%. All lots were fermented and aged separately in a combination of French & Hungarian Oak vessels, overall about 34% was new wood. After some careful blending trials, components were racked & blended in July of 2022 before being returned to mostly once used French Oak barrels and puncheons. This wine was racked once more in March of 2023 for bottling.

TASTING NOTES: Medium-ruby/ garnet in color, a wide clear margin helps to draw the eye to the density of color at the middle of this glass. Cola, sage, pumpkin pie spice, and tart black cherries dominate, but don’t obscure hints of rhubarb, black tea leaves and graham cracker crust. Soft and supple in the mouth, allspice and cinnamon are helped by some significant heat to be lead players. Orange peels, strawberries and brown sugar round out the palate before leading to a long velvety finish with hints of tobacco.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery Especial Zinfandel opens with a complex and inviting aroma of dark berry fruit, licorice, cinnamon and other baking spice plus leather and lots of other little touches like pencil shavings, dried herbs and more. It’s a wonderful start.

All it takes is one sip to know this is definitely special! It’s dreamy in fact. This is a smooth, multi-dimensional wine with pretty much all the touches from the nose making an appearance in the mouth and it gets even better with some air. We love the wonderful sweet tasting fruit in this very dry, savory wine.

It ends dry, very long and juicy on the extremely long finish. It might be even slightly better on day 2. I love it! What a trio of wines!
