A very big name (that we can’t reveal) with a lot of expertise in Syrah helped to make this delicious wine and it’s a truly an excellent example of the variety.
The Ovis Syrah comes from the High Valley appellation in Lake County which we’ve talked about a lot. Thanks to its high elevation and volcanic soils, it is one of our favorite spots to find wines, and this is another great find!

We have both a Summer Shipping option (with heat protection) and a Summer Hold option. Our priority over the summer is to get your wine to you safely should you choose to have it shipped! Here are the details on both options:
Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend.
Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, summer ship orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10).
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).
Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. Please read this post for important info to determine if the Summer Hold program is right for you.

Tasting Notes: This wine has a deep violet tone. On the nose you can find dark cherries, blackberries and blueberries with hints of smoked bacon, ground black pepper. On the palate, this Syrah reveals its potential. The flavors of ripe fruits with nuances of dark chocolate, espresso and a touch of exotic spices, leading to an elegant finish that lasts for a long time thanks to its concentration.
Vintage: In 2021, we experienced mild spring weather and early blooms, followed by a heatwave from May to July. Despite the drought, our sheep helped retain soil moisture, resulting in an early harvest from August 12th to October 20th, producing small but highly concentrated berries. This vintage promises exceptional depth and intensity.
The decision to offer this Syrah as a single varietal under the OVIS label speaks volumes of its exceptional character, the incomparable quality of our high valley fruit and the concentration achieved in the 2021 harvest. This wine reflects the unique character of the terroir and the dedication of our winemaking team. Generally we use Syrah as part of our blends but in this instance, the brightness, elegance and charm of this Syrah deserved to be showcased on its own. We will only bottle single varietals like this in exceptional years and 2021 was one of them.
This Syrah was one of the first to be planted on Shannon Ridge in 2005. Syrah truly expresses itself when grown in a challenging environment. The top of Shannon Ridge is well drained volcanic soils and wind swept each afternoon, on top of that we planted it on a 75˚ slope facing directly south for the strongest sun and UV exposure. We fermented this wine in a stainless tank then transferred it to 3 year old and neutral barrels. The 2 year barrel aging is a long micro oxygenation process that develops the midpalate and texture of the Syrah without imparting a large oak component. Slow wine made in this way is truly delicious.
Inspiration: Ovis (Latin for sheep)…. is a small lot of wine that pays homage to the flock of sheep that help control the cover crops and weeds in the vineyards. The sheep and the dedicated Great Pyrenees guard dogs are the foundation of Clay Shannon’s sustainable farming practices. His love of protecting mother earth creates fertile lands that produce this extraordinary wine that he and his family offer to you with pride.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Ovis Syrah begins with a luscious aroma of dark berry fruit, spice and licorice plus a little cedar, black pepper, vanilla and a touch of smoked meat. It’s a wonderful start!
Tasting the wine reveals similar flavors to the nose with lots of depth, concentration and well-integrated spice throughout. It’s thick, yet juicy with a smooth yet tannic texture and I love it! Plus it gets even better as it has more air.
It ends dry, very long and grippy on the finish and was just as good, if not slightly better, on day 2.
