INSIDER DEAL! Peterson 94-Point Zinfandels Extravaganza!

Get ready people, have we got a deal for you with three Bulk Buy rated wines from one of our favorite wineries!

We love this deal not just because these Zins are excellent and the discount is huge, but also because there is just an amazing distinction between these wines. The Bradford Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel is rich, smooth and deep. The Tradizionale from the West Vineyard (planted in 1902) brings the classic licorice and brambly berry notes. And the aptly named Bernier “Zinyard” Zinfandel adds an earthy perspective. This is not only a phenomenal trio of wines but also a real education into how Zinfandel from the same area can be so different.

Up first comes a wine from the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard that is normally reserved for Peterson wine club members, the 2019 Peterson Bradford Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

2019 Peterson Bradford Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel

95% Zinfandel plus 5% Petite Sirah (also from the Bradford Mountain Vineyard), this wine is aged for an incredible 26 months in 30% new French oak, 20% new Hungarian oak and the balance in 3 to 7-year-old neutral barrels. Only 250 cases were produced and it normally sells for $42.

2019 Peterson Bradford Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel Back Label

As with every wine they produce, this small batch wine is made using Peterson Winery’s “zero manipulation” philosophy eschewing additives and letting the true flavors of the grape and the particular vintage shine through. (And since it is not fined or filtered, it is also also vegan friendly).

From the winery:

Fred’s (Peterson) Vintaged View: We have a history with mountain wines and mountain vineyards going back to 1979, when I first laid eyes on Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and fell in love with the intensity of mountain fruit. I carried that devotion for mountain wines with me when I moved up to Dry Creek Valley in 1983 to develop a vineyard and build my house on Bradford Mountain.

This wine encapsulates all of the best qualities found in mountain grown Zinfandels from the Dry Creek Valley appellation. Poorer soils and colder nights harness and preserve more of the bright acidity and freshness in the grapes. More sunlight hours at the higher elevation means darker, richer fruit. Unlike benchland Zins, mountain Zins have a peppery quality and more black fruit character (think wild blackberry).

In the 2019 estate vineyard Zinfandel, we combined wine from our head-trained block, as well as our trellised rows of Zin, with 5% estate-grown Petite Sirah. The result was a delicious wine with a perfect balance of structure and flavors.

Tasting Notes: Seductive aromatics of a fresh berry tart laced with brown baking spices fill the senses. From the first sip, an inherent brightness lifts the wine across the palate, leaving a cedary spice trail in its wake. Intense flavors of ripe blackberry, black cherry and black raspberry are joined by dark plum. Traces of fresh peach and a mineral essence appear as the wine lingers. A classic Zin from our Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard.

This wine will pair so perfectly with cedar-planked wild king salmon, creamy bacon carbonara, or braised beef cheeks served with sautéed cremini mushrooms and buttery mashed potatoes.

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Peterson Bradford Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel opens with a lovely, strong, enticing aroma of black cherry, blackberry, black pepper, succulent sage and lots of other wonderful spice and herbal notes.

It only takes one sip to know that this is without a doubt a 10 Taste Rating! The wine is rich and full of absolutely delicious juicy fruit along with well-integrated spice throughout and I love the addition of the Petite Sirah. Smooth and balanced, this is just fantastic. I could drink this all day.

It ends dry, very long and very satisfying. It was just as excellent on day 2.

BULK BUY

Next we’ve got the 2019 Peterson West Vineyard Tradizionale Zinfandel, which is 97% Zinfandel and a 3% field blend of assorted red (2.5%) and white (0.5%) varieties, all from the dry-farmed West Vineyard planted in 1902. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

2019 Peterson West Vineyard Tradizionale Zinfandel

The wine spends 25 months in barrel, including 25% 1-year-old Hungarian oak, 25% 1-year-old French oak and the balance in 4-8 year-old neutral barrels. Normally retailing for $36, just a tiny 100 cases were produced.

2019 Peterson West Vineyard Tradizionale Zinfandel Back Label

From the winery:

West Vineyard, planted in 1902, is a dry-farmed, head-trained Zinfandel vineyard located on a hillside in the southeast corner of Dry Creek Valley. A traditional field-blend vineyard; a small portion is planted with 3% other red grapes (Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvedre, Carignane and some others I’m not really sure about), as well as 0.5% white grapes (Semillon, Palomino and Chasselas). All the vines are harvested at the same time and all the varieties are cofermented, which produces a smoother, fuller wine than separate fermentations and subsequent blending can give you.

This is the kind of wine that really got me hooked on Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. A traditional, old-vine field-blend wine with classic “raspberry jam” that differentiates the best Dry Creek Valley Zins from all others. Big, but balanced. Fruity, yet elegant. This is a wine that will go with almost any food, but you can also just pull the cork on a bottle and drink it with friends while playing cards or watching a good movie.

As the wine opens, layers of aromatics fill the nose. First comes a blend of fully ripened red fruit, followed by bright black raspberry aromas laced with freshly ground Tellicherry pepper. The mellow entry quickly transforms into a mid-palate filled with buoyant acidity, where layers of dark, luscious flavors — black raspberry, dark cherry, plum and blackberry — merge with spices and oak notes. This old vine Zinfandel offers lively, fresh aromas and flavors fused with finesse and elegance, creating an approachable yet layered and complex wine.

A wonderful sipping wine that will pair perfectly with a classic veal parmigiana served over a bed of fresh pasta, or meatloaf and cheesy scalloped potatoes.

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Peterson Winery West Vineyard Tradizionale Zinfandel welcomes with a classic Zin aroma of cherry, licorice, brambly berry, spice, vanilla, wintergreen and much more. It’s a great start.

It just takes one sip to know that this is a fantastic example of Zinfandel another slam dunk 10 Taste Rating. Big, balanced, smooth and quite harmonious it features juicy, deep and rich fruit along with excellent complexity. There are also tons of secondary notes to discover both from the old vines and the interesting field blend mix. I love this. And even though the alcohol is a bit high, it carries it very well.

It ends dry, savory and a bit spicy on the very long and wonderful finish. This is my kind of Zin! I absolutely love it and it was just as excellent on day 2.

BULK BUY

Rounding out today’s 3-pack we’ve got the 2019 Peterson Bernier Zinyard Zinfandel consisting of 82% Zinfandel and 18% Petite Sirah (co-fermented), all from the dry-farmed Bernier Zinyard. You will receive one bottle.

2019 Peterson Bernier Zinyard Zinfandel

The wine spends 22 months in 6-10 year-old neutral barrels. Normally retailing for $36, again just a tiny 100 cases were produced.

2019 Peterson Bernier Zinyard Zinfandel Back Label

From the winery:

Why call it a Zinyard? Originally, long time Dry Creek Valley farmers Paul and Yael Bernier planted only Zinfandel on the hillside behind their house on Canyon Road on the northern end of the valley. To honor the traditions of many of the early Italian immigrant growers, as well as enhance the Zinfandel, they later planted a small block of Petite Sirah alongside the Zin, just above the row of peach and pear trees we sometimes enjoy while sampling the vines.

Although the Zinfandel vines were planted in 1990, the Bernier Zinyard makes old-time growers feel they are walking into the past when they stroll among the vines. It is a traditional dry-farmed, head-trained (non-trellised) vineyard with Italo Sbragio’s old clone Zin grafted on to St. George rootstock.

This combination of influences embodies the very roots of Dry Creek Valley viticulture and reflects Peterson Winery’s values of savoring and embracing time-honored, traditional farming.

Richly layered aromas reveal dark cherry and ripe plum with traces of oak, cigar box and molasses. The bright entry showcases layers of dark flavors boysenberry compote, blackberry and juicy plum. The dance between bright and dark continues on into the broad finish. Mid-palate discover hints of strawberry jam, while the toasty oak essence in the background adds to the wine’s complexity. This refined and rather elegant wine offers qualities rarely found in Zinfandel.

Try pairing it with blueberry balsamic glazed rosemary chicken, or a traditional moussaka with eggplant and potatoes.

Composition: 100% Bernier Zinyard
Varietal Breakdown: 82% Zinfandel harvested September 9, 18% Petite Sirah harvested September 9 (Petite Sirah is co-fermented with Zinfandel)

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Peterson Winery Bernier Zinyard Zinfandel opens with an inviting and harmonious aroma of black cherry and peppery spice notes along with tobacco, licorice, rhubarb, some earthiness and more. A touch of mint also comes out with time in the glass.

Taking a sip reveals a wine with great depth, character and balance! It features plenty of well-integrated spice throughout, lots of licorice and even a hint of a toasty oak note, which is surprising given the age of these barrels. Touches of cranberry plus all the other notes from the nose including the earthiness also reappear. I love this wine!

It ends dry and very long with the return of the sweet tobacco notes from the nose under the lasting spicy fruit. It was just as excellent on day 2. This is another superb example of Zinfandel.

Cheers,
Jon

BULK BUY

Here’s what people are saying about our Insider Deals:

I’ve bought a ridiculous amount of wine from your deals in the last year…I just want to say that I really appreciate what you guys have done with RWS. I discovered your site looking up Costco wine reviews and have been hooked on your insider deals ever since. I’ve been referring every friend I know.

I have been buying your Insider Deals for about 3 years now and we have enjoyed every one of them. They are wines that we never would have found on our own…

The only thing I have ever been disappointed in with an Insider Deal is that I didn’t purchase more.

I recently took advantage of your offer. So glad I did, and now sorry I did not buy more (like all those quotes on your website!)

the wine is, in a single word, superb! as have been all other wines offered and purchased since I first learnt about you…

love them all so far…Glad we ran across you. Too bad we can not order them all.

Also your prices are pretty amazing.

Hey Jon! You do great work. I’ve bought a bunch of the Insider Deals and probably 80% of the wine I drink comes from them. Great values!

Jon, this is a wonderful wine all around. You have become our go-to person for wonderful wines and wine values. Please keep up the excellent job that you’re doing! Regards, a very satisfied customer.

I opened up our first bottle last weekend and was blown away.

Wow!! Just got my shipment. It is absolutely tremendous.

Hi Jon, Best thing I ever did is buy wine thru you…not been disappointed with any of them! Thank you SO MUCH!

Would you happen to be offering this one again anytime soon? I regret not buying more. This was exceptional!

I am seriously considering having the Insider Deals as my primary go-to. Why did I not do this sooner? Thank you

I love this wine I bought from you!!!! Thanks for doing what do do!!!

This an absolutely amazing wine, Jon…You’ve outdone yourself!

Thanks Jon. We already drank all 6 of the first order so we were ecstatic to see you offering it again. My wife and I both love it.

You are a man after my own heart. I have always looked for the best and least expensive wine and you just made it easier. Cheers!

Hi Jon, well, I did something people have warned about – bought 6 bottles and should have bought 12!

Have had nothing but great bottles since I started ordering your recommendations. Thanks so much!

We’ve gotten in on three of the deals and have been VERY happy with the value. I originally was going to do a wine club thing but the insider deal appeals to me much more.

The shipping on the Insider Deals is another great part of the deal. We recently paid $27 to a winery in California to ship 6 bottles (same packaging as the insider deals)….yikes!

Just got my 6 bottles and having my first glass. WHY, WHY didn’t I buy a case??!!

I really missed the boat by only getting four bottles of this offer last month. Should have bought least at a case.

My wife and I have really enjoyed getting to know new wines (and better than we used to buy!) Thanks for what you do and providing this service!

Jon – you have to stop offering all of these amazing deals. My self discipline is fading fast!!

The wine is outstanding. I am so glad I bought a case.

I only drink Reverse Wine Snob wine, it actually doesn’t make sense to buy from a store. You don’t get anything interesting, unique, and full of value otherwise.

Jon, I should have bought more! Delicious!!

I am a Certified Specialist of Wine. I love your deals. You pick great wines!! Kudos to you for getting us great deals!

Wish I would have ordered more!! It was great. Looking back, I wish I didn’t open it at our annual pool party. It’s gone. **Sob**

Hi Jon, just had to let you know that I love this wine!!!! Thanks for doing what you do.

I have purchased many times over the last several months and loved the wines!

Seriously amazing deal!!! I love a bold red, and Reverse Wine Snob delivered!!! Perfect for a rainy night!!

AMAZING!! Damn, I should have bought a CASE!!

WOW. Just… wow. Absolutely delicious. If I knew it was going to be this good, I would have bought a case… or two. This was dead-center in the sweet spot of what I like. Thank you!!

I have loved all my RWS deals, can’t wait to get this one.

I know that you don’t need to have ‘customers’ email you every time they like a wine that you have suggested/rated, and I have enjoyed many of your recommendations. But this Tannat was spectacular! Wow! That was amazing!

I finally opened a bottle of this and it did not disappoint. Delicious!!!

Thanks for a great service! We’ve been loving your emails and wine deals!

This insider deal is a great wine!!! So glad I got it!!

I’ve gotten quite a few of these and loved them all — keep them coming!

I am very much enjoying the wines I have been getting from you. I have discontinued all other wine services as the quality of the wines you select seem superior to what I was receiving elsewhere.

Bought a case wish I had purchased 2-3 cases. Fantastic buy for the price.

I love your approach to wine and all the great wine finds out there. It’s tempting to order almost every time you send out a deal. Keep up the great work, truly appreciated.

Wish I had doubled my order!
