Vineyards on the edge of the Pacific. Red Car is a small farming and winemaking operation based in Sebastopol and rooted in some of the most unique AVAs and vineyards in all of California. In 2005 we planted our Estate Vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview and for over two decades have dedicated our lives to producing site-specific, balanced wines of exceptional quality, bright fruit, complex aromatics, and moderate alcohol. 1 bottle of the 2020 Red Car Zephyr Farms Vineyard Chardonnay. From a vineyard planted exclusively to Chardonnay, this is a beautiful example of the variety that has it all. The wine spent 11 months in French oak (8% new, 92% neutral) and just 200 cases were produced. It received 95 points from James Suckling and gets a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points) from us. It has an SRP of $58.
1 bottle of the 2020 Red Car Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay. From 36-year-old vines at an elevation of 1,400 feet, this wine has layers upon layers to discover yet is still refreshingly quaffable. It spent 11 months in French oak (5% new, 95% neutral) and just 150 cases were produced. The wine received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast and gets a high 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points) from us. It also has an SRP of $58.
1 bottle of the 2017 Red Car Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. A blend of their 3 Chardonnay vineyards, two in the Fort Ross Sea-View appellation and one just outside the tiny village of Freestone, this wine has harmonized beautifully with a bit of bottle age. It spent 10 months in French oak (25% new, 75% neutral) and just 324 cases were produced. We give it a 9 Taste Rating (91-93 points). It has an SRP of $35.

ELEV. 525 FT. / PACIFIC OCEAN 6.7 MI.Tucked away and hidden amongst towering Redwoods, the Zephyr Farms vineyard is a special place for all of us here at Red Car. Planted exclusively to Chardonnay, vines on this 8-acre vineyard are blanketed by fog daily. Created over millions of years, the Goldridge soils present at the property provide an ideal match for the selections of Mt. Eden and Clone 5 Chardonnay we use in the Zephyr Farms bottling each year. Within this small yet sprawling property, we have found pockets of land where fruit matures at different paces. In turn, our picks are in multiples as we tailor each to a specific area. In 2020, this was especially true as warmer than average weather encouraged fruit to ripen and mature earlier in the season. Once in the cellar, each lot was pressed and fermented separately, to ultimately craft a small blend from several of the best barrels from the vintage. The 2020 bottling was aged for 11 months on lees in a combination of neutral and new French Oak barrels.

The 2020 Red Car Zephyr Farms Vineyard Chardonnay opens with a complex and harmonious aroma of apricot, some woodsy, barrel-room notes, a little bit of a fresh, floral note and lots of other interesting touches as you sniff and swirl. That little bit of new French oak adds another layer to the aroma, which isn’t buttery or overly oaky, just beautiful. It’s a fabulous start.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, complex, deep and very satisfying wine. This Chardonnay has got it all. There are layers of fruit, juicy acidity, a wonderful oak influence, some intriguing minerality, touches of butter and more. I love it!
It ends dry and very long on the lingering finish that just keeps going and going. Fantastic!

MOHRHARDT VINEYARD
ELEV. 1,400 FT. / PACIFIC OCEAN 5.0 MIRural and very remote, the Mohrhardt Ridge vineyard lies within the heart of Fort Ross – Seaview and is home to the oldest vines that we farm. Planted in 1984, this old-school planting is both fickle and magical at the same time. Widely spaced rows and vines yielded a mere 1.25 tons to the acre in 2020, where the small, even tiny bunches of Old Wente Chardonnay were just enough to produce 6 barrels. We took great care in pressing this fruit, as to preserve the naturally delicate nature of the resulting wines. Fermented exclusively in neutral French Oak barrels, the 2020 bottling is a true expression of vintage, vineyard, and region. Produced in traditional style, using inert gases and gravity throughout elevage, this small blend was aged for 11 months on lees before being bottled.

The 2020 Red Car Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay opens with a fresh, intriguing aroma of apples, some dried herbal notes, lemon, a touch of tropical fruit and a hint of a buttery note. It’s a wonderful start.
The wine tastes smooth and silky and has a sneaky complexity to it. There are layers upon layers here to contemplate if you take your time but the wine is also refreshingly quaffable. It features similar flavors to the nose with great balance and juicy acidity.
It ends dry and long on the lip-smacking finish that also has hints of sea salt minerality.

Our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay offers a unique opportunity to color outside the lines. We do this via blending select clones and blocks from each of our three Chardonnay vineyards, in pursuance of harmony and balance in the glass. With two of our plantings in the remote and dramatic Fort Ross Sea-View appellation, and one just outside the tiny village of Freestone, we are afforded the opportunity to farm and produce Chardonnay from some of the most unique coastal locations in California. 2017 proved to be a stellar growing year, we experienced a long, slow and cool growing season, where Chardonnay was able to ripen to full maturity while maintaining beautiful natural chemistry. Each lot is fermented in French Oak barrels, and aged on lees until bottling. The result is a wine that reflects its unique terroir with racy acidity, rich texture and a strong mineral presence.

And now on to our review:
The 2017 Red Car Sonoma Coast Chardonnay begins with wonderful floral notes plus some lime, apple, lemon cream and even a bit of minerality. It’s a deep, very attractive and fresh aroma and I love it.
Tasting the wine reveals it to still be quite fresh but you can also tell that a bit of bottle age has just harmonized the whole wine. It’s really drinking brilliantly right now. Very smooth and with a bit of a creamy mouthfeel, it features great balance and great acidity with similar flavors to the nose plus added touches of spice and a hint of butterscotch in the mouth.
It ends dry, long and delicious. What a trio of Chardonnay, don’t miss this deal!
