The first half is 3 bottles of the 2020 Scotto Cellars Reserve Zinfandel from 75 year-old vines at the Mohr-Fry Ranch in Lodi. This acclaimed vineyard and farming family goes back 6 generations to 1855! And the wine made from these old vine, head-trained grapes is fabulous.

This is a smooth, harmonious, balanced and delicious Zin that will be best friends with anything slathered in BBQ sauce! The wine spent 24 months in French and American oak and just 267 cases were produced. We rate it at 91-93 points.

The second half of today’s 6-pack is 3 bottles of the 2021 Scotto Family Cellars Reserve Tempranillo from Ron Silva’s Silvaspoons Vineyard in Alta Mesa, Lodi. Nicknamed “California’s Portuguese grape king”, Ron and his vineyard are renowned for his willingness to grow varieties that are rarely found in California.

His vineyard, which is situated between California’s Sacramento River Delta and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in the Alta Mesa (Spanish for “high table”) AVA in Lodi, is the perfect spot to grow this variety. It benefits both from the afternoon Delta breezes and the soils that are similar to Portugal.

The wine is complex, layered and delicious. Aged 18 months in French oak, just 328 cases were produced. We rate it at 91-93 points.

Let’s take a look at the Reserve Zin first.

From the winery:

Appellation: Mohr-Fry Ranch vineyards, Lodi
Varietal Composition: 100% Zinfandel

These 75 year old, head trained vines consistently yield aromatic, superbly flavored Zinfandel. The fruit was hand harvested in the very early morning, rushed to the winery and de-stemmed to tank for fermentation. 24 months of barrel aging followed in seasoned French and American oak.

The aromatics include cherry blossoms and spicy white pepper. Bright essence of red pear, red cherry and a hint of red currants form a multi-layered flavor profile. The long growing season characterized by extensive cloud cover contributed to the excellent balance and structure. Spicy snacks, grilled foods, pizza and almost any type of meat are excellent companions.

And now on to our review:

The 2020 Scotto Cellars Reserve Zinfandel from the Mohr-Fry Ranch opens with a very pleasing aroma of black cherry and berry fruit plus lovely notes of violets and baking spices. Touches of cedar, leather and dried herbs also contribute harmoniously. It’s a great start.

The wine tastes very smooth and features great balance. With pleasing vanilla and spice in the mouth along with nice juicy fruit, this is very harmonious. Quite Zin-like, this would be great paired with anything in BBQ sauce.

It ends dry and long with lots of lasting spice and it was just as good on day 2. Stock up!

Let’s take a look at the Reserve Tempranillo next.

From the winery:

Appellation: Silvaspoon Vineyard, Alta Mesa, Lodi
Varietal Composition: 95% Tempranillo, 5% Petite Sirah
Winemaking: Aged in seasoned French oak barrels for 18 months

Tasting Notes: Rich earth, floral, fig and red juicy aromatics. Bright and medium-bodied in the mouth with red cherry and some herbal, earthy, briary complexing elements that lead to a fresh, clean and balanced finish.

Ideal with a broad range of tapas.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Scotto Family Cellars Reserve Tempranillo opens with an expressive aroma of black cherry, leather, licorice, vanilla, blackberry, spice, cedar and more. It’s a fantastic start!

Taking a sip reveals similar flavors to the nose with juicy fruit in the mouth and well-integrated spice notes. It’s easy to drink but also complex, layered and delicious. This is an excellent example of Tempranillo.

It ends dry, juicy, a bit grippy and quite long on the lovely finish. It was just as good on day 2.

Tempranillo pairs wonderfully with pork, burgers and red meats and much more so this is another great wine to stock up on, especially at this price!
