• 1 bottle of the 2023 Starfield Vineyards Hope Rising Estate White Blend. It is a blend of 43% Marsanne, 43% Roussanne and 14% Viognier. Aged 8 months in 11% new French oak and 89% neutral French Oak, just 353 cases were produced. It received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Wine Competition and 91 Points from James Suckling. We put it at the very high end of our 9 Taste Rating (93 points).

The wine was barrel fermented and aged in 25% new French oak and 75% neutral French oak for 8 months. 96% Viognier and 4% Roussanne, just 303 cases were produced. Up first, let’s take a look at the 2023 Starfield Vineyards Estate Marsanne. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

From the winery:

VINEYARD NOTES: Our Marsanne grows on an East-facing slope that receives gentle morning sun, ideal for delicate whites. In 2023, the cooler than usual weather in El Dorado allowed us to extend the ripening period. We harvested at 23 Brix, roughly 1-2 weeks later than typical.

FERMENTATION & AGING: The Marsanne was fermented in stainless steel tanks for 12 days to preserve its fresh aromas. After fermentation, sulfur was added to prevent malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged for 8 months, with 8% in new French oak and the rest in neutral French oak.

TASTING NOTES: The 2023 Marsanne is lively & refreshing with a touch of creaminess. Verdant aromas of lemongrass, kaffir lime, & lemon verbena burst from the glass, while sumptuous notes of honeydew melon, tropical kiwi, and nectarine intertwine seamlessly. The palate of this Marsanne is perfectly balanced. It is clean and refreshing, with elegant fruit, slight minerality, and just a touch of creaminess and salinity that tie everything together effortlessly. The palate opens with bright pops of candied lemon, dried mandarin, and fresh apricot, underscored by soft hints of white pepper, salted plum, and green tea. This wine is deliciously drinkable now but will continue to develop rich & nutty flavors as it ages. It is expected to be excellent through 2027.

And now on to our review:

The 2023 Starfield Vineyards Estate Marsanne opens with a very harmonious aroma of tropical fruit (pineapple, banana, mango, kiwi) and citrus (orange, lemon, lime) plus some wonderful herbal notes. It also has a touch of a lovely, creamy note. This is really attractive!

Taking a sip reveals lots of rich, juicy fruit similar to the nose with a nice tanginess to it when tasting. Featuring fantastic balance, depth and acidity, the creamy note from the nose also shows up in the smooth and round, yet lively, mouthfeel. And it’s just as good if not even better once it warms up a bit too.

It ends dry and tart on the lip-smacking and very long finish. This is a lovely, lovely wine!

TASTING NOTES: This beautiful Rhône-style white wine blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier is a superb standout! The super bright & intensely concentrated bouquet opens with lemon curd, Kaffir lime, candied ginger, fresh Summer jasmine and wild mint, while hints of Gala apple, sandalwood and chamomile add interest & depth. The palate is refreshing and clean, with vivacious acidity balanced by just a touch of creamy effervescence. Flavors of lemon zest, lavender lemonade, Mandarin orange and dried pineapple are complemented by a hint of vanilla cookie and tropical lychee. The lively flavors of the palate are carried through the finish with a vibrant swathe of acidity that keeps you coming back for more. Drink now through 2028.

The 2023 Starfield Vineyards Hope Rising opens with a pleasing aroma of lemon, lime, lots of floral notes and a touch of tropical fruit. It’s a fresh and aromatic start!

The wine tastes simply delightful. Super fresh and refreshing to drink, it features similar flavors to the nose with a touch of creaminess and also effervescence in the mouth. There are also some added notes of ginger and vanilla in this rich, balanced and harmonious wine. Delicious!

It ends crisp, clean, dry, long and tangy on the fantastic finish. This is another lip-smacker that would make a lovely spring and summer wine. Pair it with fish.

Finally, let’s take a look at the 2023 Starfield Vineyards Estate Viognier. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

From the winery:

VINEYARD NOTES: Our Starfield Estate Grown Viognier is cultivated on the coolest, east-facing slopes, spanning a 100-foot elevation range. The 2023 growing season in El Dorado was long and cool, allowing us to harvest the Viognier earlier than usual, at just under 21° Brix. This early harvest highlighted the herbaceous notes and muted the riper, honeyed hay aroma. The grapes were picked on September 14th, 2023, which is about 1-2 weeks later than normal, despite the lower ripeness.

FERMENTATION & AGING: We used 25% New French Oak Barrels for this vintage and inoculated it with Saccharomyces yeast, completing primary fermentation in about 20 days. For the first time, we successfully used inoculation for secondary malolactic fermentation, retaining the wine’s freshness while adding creamy complexity. The wine aged for 8 months in barrels, integrating beautifully.

WINEMAKER IMPRESSIONS: Viognier is one of the most expressive varieties in our region, similar to Chardonnay, and showcases winemaker style well. This vintage leans towards the qualities I love about Condrieu Viognier, with rich, creamy, and complex notes beautifully balanced by floral plumeria and herba-ceous Sierra Spice. The palate is smooth and complex, exemplifying the potential of Viognier at 2,300ft elevation in the Sierra Highlands.

TASTING NOTES: With intensely tropical aromatics and an ultra-luxurious body, this is a truly exceptional expression of Viognier. Loads of fresh picked stone fruit, plumeria, gardenia, and fresh ground coriander seed greet your nose, with tropical notes of mango, lychee, and melon candy following suit. The body opens with uber creamy and rich coconut cream, orange creamsicle, Tahitian vanilla, and lemon curd, with hints of fresh pineapple and nectarine. Deliciously tropical and refreshing, this is the perfect wine for a warm day! Drink now through 2027.

And now on to our review:

The 2023 Starfield Vineyards Estate Viognier opens with mango, melon, pear and nectarine plus honeysuckle and other floral notes and some dried herbal notes. It’s very aromatic, just as it should be with this variety, with a lot of complex and inviting accents. It’s a great start!

The wine tastes just as it smells with some added lemon cream. It also has a smooth, round almost unctuous mouthfeel plus great depth and balance. This is truly delicious.

It ends dry, very long and tart on the fantastic finish. This is a lovely example of Viognier!
