Alright Rhone fans, today is your day as we welcome Larry Schaffer of tercero wines and President of the renowned Rhone Rangers organization to our Insider Deals. He brings with him three excellent, hand (and foot) crafted, small production wines.
Before we get to those, here’s a bit more about the winery:
Larry went back to school later in life to pursue his passion, taking classes at community colleges with kids who literally could have been his kids, and then received his MS in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis. He moved to the Santa Barbara County wine region, and that is where he has remained since 2005, starting on the winemaking team at Fess Parker Winery and then eventually branching off to start and run tercero wines.
tercero wines concentrates on small lot, hand crafted wines using grapes exclusively from leading Santa Barbara County vineyards and works with grapes from nearly every AVA within the county. Though his main concentration is working with rhone varieties, Larry remains curious and therefore also works with pinot noir, gewurztraminer, cabernet franc, and a few other fun and interesting grapes. And therein lies the beauty of Santa Barbara County.

This marks the 10th straight vintage of producing a 100% Mourvedre from Santa Barbara County, and I could not be more proud of a wine.
This 2015 Mourvedre is a blend of 3 different sites throughout the area – some warmer and some cooler. This combination allows this blend to speak of what I find the ideal Mourvedre to possess – brambly fruit, spiciness and a good dollop of earthiness. The lots were each foot stomped by Larry, fermented 100% whole cluster with their stems, pressed, and then aged for 40 months in older oak barrels, unracked until just before blending and bottling. The wine has been in bottle for 5 years and is the current release.
If you like Mourvedre, this is a wine to stock up on. If you don’t like Mourvedre, this bottle will change your mind.

And now on to our review:
The 2015 tercero Mourvedre opens with a pleasing aroma of dark fruit, lots of earthy notes and a little spice that increases with time in the glass. This one needs a good amount of time to open up so let it breathe to experience all the layers.
Tasting the wine reveals a smooth, round mouthfeel with similar flavors to the nose including the earthiness. The wine also features good balance and acidity.
Nice spice notes lead into the dry, very long, slightly grippy finish. This is a very nice wine that is more on the elegant side for Mourvedre.
It was even better on day 2 where it opened up even more.
Next we’ve got the 2015 tercero Watch Hill Vineyard Grenache. It has an SRP of $60. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

This is my 9th release of this Grenache from this unheralded vineyard located near Los Alamos.
This wine is a rather ‘showy’ Grenache – soaring aromatics with fruit and spice up front and center – but is not overblown at all. And this wine has a great structure as well – the tannins are prominent and show off the ‘completeness’ of this variety.
I love the expressiveness of this wine, both aromatically and texturally, and pair it regularly with a variety of foods, including basic burgers and pizza to more complicated red meat dishes. The aromatics jump out of the glass, so sometimes I’ll just sit and smell it for hours (seriously!)
The grapes were brought in, foot stomped by me, fermented 100% whole cluster with their stems, pressed, and then aged for 40 months in older oak barrels, unracked until just before blending and bottling. The wine has been in bottle for 5 years and is a current release.

And now on to our review:
The 2015 tercero Watch Hill Vineyard Grenache opens with a very attractive aroma full of strawberry and dark berry fruit, spice, mint and lots of other herbal notes. There is a lots going on here and it’s very nice!
It only takes one sip to know that is an excellent example of Grenache. It does need a bit of air, so give it some time to breathe but once it opens up it is harmonious, layered, juicy and quite delicious and it just keeps on getting better.
It ends dry, very long, juicy and delicious, just let it breathe! In fact, it was still improving on day 2 which is pretty impressive since we already have this at a 10 Taste Rating. Buy a few to stash in your cellar for a few years.

Our 4th release of this lesser known Rhone red variety, and it continues to be a ‘star’ in our line up.
We affectionately refer to this as one of our ‘acoustic’ reds – it’s light colored, lighter in texture but ethereal in both texture and aromatic complexity. Foot stomped, fermented 100% whole cluster with their stems, pressed and then aged for about 18 months in older oak. Only 12% alcohol.

And now on to our review:
The 2018 tercero Cinsault opens with an inviting aromas of bright, fresh, ripe red fruit plus a touch of spice. It’s a great start!
Tasting the wine reveals it to be light-bodied but smooth and silky, almost Pinot Noir like. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, it is balanced and elegant in the mouth with light touches of spice. Perhaps surprisingly given it’s light bodied nature it is very food friendly, pairing well with all kinds of different foods, including hearty and spicy dishes. The lower alcohol is quite refreshing as well.
It ends dry, a bit juicy and quite long and was similar on day 2.
