Discover our stunning 120-acre estate in Alexander Valley, nestled between the Russian River and the Mayacama Mountains. With 100 acres of meticulously farmed land, our vineyard boasts some of the finest varietals in the region. Our iconic Zinfandel vines, spanning 20 acres and dating back to 1905, are meticulously propagated and known as the esteemed “Mazzoni Clone,” a pre-prohibition Heritage Zinfandel clone.
And while the family has farmed these lands for close to a century, the Zialena family label and winery was a more recent dream of brother and sister Mark and Lisa Mazzoni:
With a decade of experience, Mark envisioned creating wines under a family label. In 2012, he co-founded Zialena Winery with his sister, Lisa Mazzoni, focusing on artisanal Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Mark’s decision to commit to concrete fermentation showcased his dedication to innovation. This method, used sparingly in the New World but extensively in parts of the Old World, intrigued him with its potential to enhance wine quality. The launch of Zialena Winery and the buildout of ten permanent concrete fermentation tanks at the heart of the winery, was a realization of Mark’s lifelong dream, rooted in perfecting his family’s legacy vineyards.
Zialena’s winemaking approach is rooted in minimalism and tradition, guided by Mark’s belief in letting the fruit speak for itself with minimal interference. Our estate grapes undergo meticulous hand-sorting before being gently fed by gravity into ten specially crafted concrete tanks, where natural fermentation takes place. We take pride in preserving the integrity of our wines by opting for minimal filtration and fining, allowing them to develop naturally in the barrel. Once bottled, Zialena wines gracefully mature over time, yet are also delightful for immediate enjoyment upon purchase.
The winemaking facility covers 7,000 square feet with a current production of approximately 2,500 cases. The winery includes 10 open top concrete tanks for fermentation, a first for Alexander Valley. A barrel room, wine laboratory, and the winemaker’s blending office surround the concrete tanks and complete the winery. The facility began construction in April 2016 and was completed in February 2017.
The design and concept were the ambitions of Mark and Lisa Mazzoni from their early days walking the vineyard with their grandfather Jim and father, Mike. The dream was for a state of the art facility that could allow for every opportunity to implement the winemaking philosophy and style true to the heritage of their family and the wines they love.

The 2019 Zinfandel from winemaker Mark Mazzoni, made from the Mazzoni Zinfandel Clone, is a standout estate-grown wine. This wine features a cherry and rose petal aroma, with nutmeg and five spice powder. Its light to medium body combines strawberry rhubarb and clove flavors, balanced by bright acidity.
The Zinfandel begins with trellised vines meticulously cordon pruned to ensure low yields. Zinfandel, known for its uneven ripening, undergoes a careful sorting process, resulting in a blend of slightly under ripe, over ripe, and perfectly ripe clusters. This meticulous sorting allows for a balanced spectrum of flavors, resulting in a “Medium Weight” Zinfandel. Handled personally by Mark, fermentation lasts 1½ to 2 weeks, combining natural and induced fermentation, including 5% whole cluster fermentation, which imparts strawberry and rhubarb tones while tempering the fruit-driven nature of Zinfandel with stem tannins. The wine is barreled down and aged in Allier and Vosges oak barrels, fired to a medium toast, before resting in our barrel room.
Pair it with Duck Breast with Cherry Sauce. The rich and savory duck breast, complemented by a tangy cherry sauce, will highlight the wine’s cherry and rose petal notes. The complexity of the five spice powder and clove in the wine will be echoed by the depth of flavor in the duck, while the bright acidity will balance the richness of the meat and sauce.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Zialena Wines Alexander Valley Zinfandel opens with a lovely, harmonious aroma of dark, brambly fruit plus licorice and spice. It also has touches of cranberry, white pepper and cola. It’s a great start.
The wine tastes smooth and features similar flavors to the nose with a touch of rhubarb. Juicy and flavorful without going over the top, the wine has great depth and balance. This is another wonderful example of Zinfandel from Zialena.
It ends dry and quite long on the lasting finish and was even a bit better on day 2.
