We love Cabernet Franc from Argentina and we also love Bodega Tapiz, a winery we had the chance to visit in Mendoza several years ago. (This was the trip that inspired our first ever wine flash sale back in 2016!) Today we have something special for you.
Smooth, complex, dynamic, today we’ve got an absolutely delicious example of Cabernet Franc that we rate at 91-93 points. (James Suckling agrees rating it at 91 points.)
The winery is owned by Patricia Ortiz and the winemaking team is led by Fabian Valenzuela and famed Petrus winemaker Jean Claude Berrouet. The wine is imported by Vino Del Sol who were just named Importer of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in large part thanks to the quality of these wines.

The Zolo name comes from the start of the winery when Patricia and her husband (depicted on the label) lived in Buenos Aires. Since he was a lawyer and unable to travel all the way to Mendoza during the week, Patricia left him and the kids “zolo” each week. The hat blowing off his head on the label is because the wines are so good.
This is 100% estate Cabernet Franc from vineyards at 3,000 to 3,444 feet of elevation. The wine is aged 12 months in French barrels and has only 2.95 g/L of residual sugar. Just 1,800 cases were produced and today is your chance to get some at well below the market price (if you can even find it anywhere else)!

WINERY INFORMATION: Zolo was created in 2003 by of one of Argentina’s leading women in wine, Patricia Ortiz, when she established one of Argentina’s most forward-thinking wineries. Under Patricia’s leadership, Zolo stays true to her vision of creating wines with elegance and identity, reflective of their terroir and respectful to the environment. All Zolo wines are made from estate-grown fruit which have been sustainably farmed. The winemaking team is led by Fabian Valenzuela and famed winemaker from Petrus Jean Claude Berrouet.
LABEL NOTES: Owner and President Patricia Ortiz spends much of the week working in Mendoza, leaving her husband alone – solo/zolo – in Buenos Aires.
FERMENTATION: Cold pre‐maceration takes place at 8˚C for 5 days. Fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 15 days at 28˚C then rests on lees for 16 days. 100% malolactic fermentation.
COLOR: Intense ruby red.
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of red fruits such as raspberry and red plum, mixed with subtle floral and herbal notes. It has sweet tannins and a balanced acidity giving freshness. Its passage through the wood contributes complexity, notes of vanilla and chocolate. It is a very elegant wine.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 Zolo Reserve Cabernet Franc opens with a strong, attractive aroma of red berries, plum and licorice with some minty herbal garrigue-like notes. There also touches of spice and vanilla. It’s a great start!
Tasting reveals a smooth, absolutely delicious example of Cabernet Franc without the under-ripe green notes common is so many others. The wine features good depth and structure along with lots of flavor with no sugar. We found it to be similar to the nose with all the same complex, secondary notes plus juicy fruit and good acidity. This is succulent stuff!
It ends very long, dry, dynamic, grippy and juicy with some underlying graphite minerality. It’s a wonderful finish that we’ve come to find on many of the best Argentine examples of this variety. It was just as good on day 2.
