From the bottle:

Our family winegrowing and winemaking passion is rooted in our sustainably farmed vineyards and in our winery in Paso Robles, California. Here, the warm days and cool nights are ideal for growing the traditional Bordeaux-style varieties. The Los Osos soil series found in our vineyards has proven the perfect medium for Merlot – fostering black cherry and currant flavors and a supple texture. A full year of oak barrel aging rounds out the finished wine. Perfect pairings include seafood bisque, pasta with mushrooms, steak off the grill, or your favorite takout pizza.

The 2020 J. Lohr Los Osos Paso Robles Merlot opens with pleasing aromas of ripe dark fruits, violet and baking spice.

The nicely balanced wine tastes juicy and rich in the mouth and features a smooth, round mouthfeel. In fact, it almost tastes a bit sweet but it’s decidedly not.

This is crowd pleasing blend that has just enough Merlot (76%) to be labeled as a single varietal. Given Merlot’s perception by some consumers I’m surprised they didn’t label it as a blend but good for them for not.

It ends dry, long, and a bit grippy and gets even better with some air.
