Josh Cellars Reserve North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon Review

Last Updated on January 1, 2023

Another nice Cab from Joseph Carr, the Josh Cellars Reserve North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon.

Josh Cellars Reserve North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon Review

Cabernet Sauvignon from the North Coast of California including Napa, Sonoma, Lake (Red Hills AVA) and Mendocino Counties. The wine is aged with 25% new French oak.

Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $22 and is available for as low as $16.

Today we check out our third recommended Cab in the Josh Cellars line-up. So far we’ve enjoyed and recommended the base Josh Cellars Cabernet California bottling and the Josh Cellars Reserve Paso Robles Cabernet. (We were not a fan of the Bourbon barrel version.) Up next comes another bottle in their Reserve line, the North Coast Cab.

From the bottle:

My dad, Josh, taught me that the most important things in life take hard work. I created my Reserve wines with this in mind, taking care to craft them to the highest standards.

Fruit-forward and balanced, our North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from areas throughout the North Coast AVA, including Sonoma and Lake counties. The wine is bursting with aromas of dark cherries and roasted walnuts while the palate shows flavors of dark cherries, toasted hazelnuts, mocha, and a touch of vanilla leading into a long finish. The tannins are round and smooth.

The 2019 Josh Cellars Reserve North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon begins similar to the other Josh Cabs with some really well done oak influence on the nose. It also features dark fruit, baking spice and some graphite and cedar notes too.

Taking a sip reveals a full-bodied, smooth and juicy wine with cola and baking spice notes. Overall I found this to be pretty comparable to the normal California bottling which is the best value of the bunch although this one is slightly more tannic and has a bit more of a lively mouthfeel than the others.

It ends dry, long and a bit grippy with lingering juicy fruit and more cola notes. On pure taste alone this is probably my favorite of the bunch but not my much (and not enough to push it to a 9 on our Taste Rating). It was just as good day 2.
