From the winery:
The Malbec is sourced from a 2.12 acre single block on the western-most portion of our ranch. The vines were planted in 1989 and we’ve made a single-varietal wine since the 2012 vintage. Malbec is primarily found in Cahors in Southwest France and now Argentina, but does very well in Sonoma County, where plentiful sunshine and heat imparts the ripe, juicy flavors and inky color the varietal is well-known for worldwide. For aging, we use 100% French Oak (30% – 40% new) exclusively and produce approximately 200-300 cases annually.
Tasting Notes: Nose of black currant and plum with a touch of spicy cigar box. Our Malbec is a big, deep, dense, and structured wine with dominant aromas of black currant and plum with a touch of spicy cigar box. Its extra-long finish will make you fall in love and beg for more.
Food Pairing Notes: Because of our Malbecs versatility, food pairings don’t have to be solely meat-based. Its black currant and plum fruit notes make it ideal to pair with more savory dark-meat poultry and pork. Our Malbec’s flavor complexity and hint of spice allows for an equally complex blend of food pairing options. These can range from pork loin, St. Louis pork ribs, lean brisket, duck, roast beef, and wild game. When it comes to pairing cheese with our Malbec, go sharp and don’t be afraid of strong cheeses. Some of our favorites are hard-matured cheddars and semi-firm goat milk cheese and we suggest serving them along side black cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. And now on to our review:
The 2017 Kelley & Young Malbec pours beautifully dark and inky in the glass and immediately greets you with plentiful aromas of dark fruit and spice plus notes of licorice and a little cigar box. It’s a big, enticing aroma and we love it.
The wine tastes just like it smells which is a very good thing. Big and structured with great depth, balance and complexity the wine also features a bit of juiciness on the fruit, good acidity, and a smooth, dense and chewy mouthfeel. This is extraordinarily delicious! It’s still tasting quite fresh too and has plenty of life left and it gets even better as it has more air.
Plenty of spice plus more licorice and vanilla lead into the dry, grippy and very long finish. It was just as good on day 2.

The Zinfandel is sourced from the Northern part of the ranch on Suther Laughlin Loam soils facing South across the valley. The vines were planted from 1989 through 1997. For aging, we use 100% French Oak (40% new) exclusively and produce approximately 200-300 cases annually.
Tasting Notes: On the nose, the wine opens with notes of dark cherry, black berries and bitter-sweet chocolate followed by full and rich flavors of dark cherry and black berries. It has an extra-long finish of bittersweet chocolate and just a bit of spice on the finish.
Food Pairing Notes: It is perfect paired with roast beef, pork, lamb, or duck, as well as with aged cheeses, dried fruits, and nuts. Drink at room temperature with your favorite cut of beef (rib-eye or filet mignon), grilled beef kebabs, hamburger, BBQ baby back ribs, rack of lamb, or your favorite pasta or pizza. Our zinfandel is greatly enjoyed with strong and rich cheeses like blue, feta, stilton, aged gruyere, gorgonzola, and havarti. One of our favorite pairings: Braised short ribs

And now on to our review:
The 2017 Kelley & Young Zinfandel opens with a classic Zin aroma of brambly black cherry, blackberry and other dark fruit plus plenty of licorice and some vanilla, mint and chocolate. It’s a great start.
This is an excellent example of Zinfandel when tasting too. This smooth wine is loaded with rich, spicy, juicy fruit but also features lots of secondary touches similar to the nose plus some added dark chocolate and leather. And while it has plenty of flavor, it also has great balance. This has aged wonderfully and is drinking beautifully right now. That should continue for at least the next five years.
It ends with a dry, very long and grippy finish and was even slightly better on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).
