Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Box Wine Review

Checking out a Costco boxed wine that is the equivalent of $4 a bottle, we review the 2023 Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Box Wine from California.

Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Box Wine Review

Cabernet Sauvignon from California.

One of the big differences we’ve found between Costco and Trader Joe’s over the years is that Trader Joe’s has a much wider selection of wines under $10. While Costco does indeed have a few between $5 and $10, they have almost nothing under $5. Their offerings in this category are dwarfed by TJ’s.

Today we’re checking out a new vintage of a Kirkland Signature selection that gets all the way down to the equivalent of $4 a bottle, thanks to its 3L box format, which retails for $15.99 with the latest vintage. The box price is up $2 from the last time we reviewed it (it was $13.99) but keep on reading, because it is more than worth it!

The Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 3L box is available exclusively at Costco.

2023 Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Box Wine Side Label

We last reviewed the 2020 version of this box and it barely made a Recommended Buy rating, getting a Taste Rating of just a 6 (85-86 points). We found it to be a bit sweet and oaky and rather manufactured tasting.

As such, we were surprised to the see the prominent 93 point rating from Wine Enthusiast on the Costco sign for the current, 2023 vintage. A little digging also revealed a 91 point rating from Tastings. Both of those scores are pretty incredible for a $4 per bottle wine. Let’s check it out!

The 2023 Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Box Wine opens with a rather savory nose with dark berry fruit (blackberry, black cherry), plum, lots of varied dried herbal notes, a little vanilla, leather, cedar and more. There’s quite a bit going on and its quite nice.

Tasting reveals the wine to be smooth with surprising depth and balance. There is lots of delicious, sweet tasting fruit in this dry (5 g/L of residual sugar), medium-bodied wine. It’s very easy to drink.

It ends dry, quite long and a bit grippy. This is just a really nice rendition of Cabernet! And while we can’t go quite as high as those other scores we mentioned, this is legit good stuff and an insane value.

That said, as we’ve seen there can be a lot of variation in this wine by vintage, so pay close attention to which you are buying.
