Sparkling wine from England, but it comes at a price. We check out the Louis Pommery England Brut.

Louis Pommery England Brut Review

A non-vintage sparkling wine blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from Southern England. The wine is made in the traditional method like Champagne with the secondary fermentation that creates the bubbles happening in the bottle.

Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $40, but can be found closer to $35 (Saturday Splurge) including at Total Wine. It is imported by Vranken-Pommery America.

We’ve heard a lot about the increasing growth of English sparkling wine the last few years, so we were more than happy to check this one out. Thanks to increased investments and global warming southern England has turned into a bit of a hot spot for sparkling wines.

According to this BBC article, southern England now has a similar climate to what the Champagne region had 50 years ago. Add to that the chalky soils in many parts of the region and you’ve got a nice combination for making delicious sparkling wines.

It’s also interesting that this particular wine comes from a well-respected French Champagne house. Let’s check it out.

From the bottle:

Our cellar master has combined premium English grapes with the wine making tradition and expertise of the Pommery House to create a distinctive, fresh and elegant wine. Louis Pommery England is the creation of Pinglestone Estate, Hampshire, where the planting of a 100 acre vineyards started in 2017.

12.5% Alcohol

The Louis Pommery England Brut opens with an intriguing, attractive aroma of citrus (lemon, orange zest) and green apple plus some lovely notes of freshly made bread dough. It’s a nice, classic start.

Taking a sip reveals this to be a fresh and crisp wine with plenty of fine bubbles. It’s quite delicious and balanced when tasting and features juicy fruit similar to the nose and plenty of acidity.

It ends crisp, dry and long with a touch of lasting saltiness.

If this was purely based on price, we’d probably pass on this wine, but as an opportunity for the adventurous to try an English sparkling wine, this makes a good choice. I’m guessing as the market matures, we’ll see more examples of these wines falling into our price range.
