The Wirz Vineyard is located just east of the Gabilan Mountain range near the Coast View Vineyard. Established in 1964, the Wirz vineyard was furrow irrigated until adequately established and dry-farmed ever since. Pat Wirz describes how wide spaced, head-trained vines allow cross cultivation (tilling rows in a grid pattern as opposed to parallel lines) which creates natural, undervine composting. This process dually benefits moisture retention in the soil as well as increases soil microbe diversity. The Wirz vineyard has been listed as an “historic” vineyard (the second oldest Riesling vineyard in the state) and is one of the truly great Riesling vineyards on the Central Coast.

The second half of today’s 4-pack comes from the Lafond Vineyard. You will receive two bottles of the 2021 Maidenstoen Lafond Vineyard Riesling:

One of the first vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills, Lafond was originally planted in 1971. Along with the rest of Santa Rita Hills, it is well known for Pinot Noir & Chardonnay (after a certain film brought fame to Pinot noir and the appellation). However popular the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, David Lafond continues to farm over 10 acres of Riesling on some of the Central Coast’s most valuable vineyard land. Lafond is Maidenstoen’s coldest site and the vines here struggle with inclement weather and coastal influence. I’ve worked with the Lafond Vineyard since 2014, always producing wines that have tension and great natural acidity.

2021 Wirz Riesling came in a bit earlier than usual as the vintage expressed high intensity from lighter crop and drier weather. The Wirz vineyard excels at its consistency and balance in the vineyard. 2021 Wirz Riesling boasts lush citrus and honeysuckle aromas with prominent natural acidity, minerality and freshness on the palate.

The 2021 Maidenstoen Wirz Vineyard Riesling opens with a pleasing and engaging aroma of lemon and lime plus a little honeysuckle and wet rock. It’s a great start.

Tasting the dry wine reveals a lusciously smooth mouthfeel with wonderful texture and good acidity. Featuring similar flavors to the nose with a little tropical fruit in the mouth as well, this wine also offers great depth and structure. This is a really pleasing example of old-vine Riesling with plenty of aging potential just as you would expect.

The dry, dynamic finish build and builds and builds and seems to last forever! Fantastic.

2021 was a dry growing season with incremental weather during flowering created low yields & intense concentration. Substantial tannins & moderate astringency resulted in a stylistic choice to finish this wine slightly off dry with some residual sugar to balance the structure & phenolics. The 2021 Lafond has broad texture, rich with stone fruit & length on the palate, owing it to a truly cellar-worthy wine that will evolve and please for some time.

The 2021 Maidenstoen Lafond Vineyard Riesling opens with a very full, intriguing aroma. Lemon and apple combine wonderfully with touches of floral and mineral notes along with a hint of petrol. It’s another great start.

Taking a sip reveals a crisp, vibrant mouthfeel and texture plus all the same touches from the nose combining nicely in the mouth. Featuring a bit more tropical fruit in the mouth and perhaps just a touch of sweetness on the juicy fruit, this wine has great depth. Just don’t drink it too cold or you’ll miss out on some of the excellent complexity.

Just like the Wirz, the finish builds and builds and lasts a very long time. This is delicious! It also has great aging potential.
