Tom Meadowcroft says that the key to a quality Cabernet Sauvignon begins in the vineyard with careful and patient farming. He calls this type of viticulture “four wheel drive farming” as opposed to a more lax “two wheel drive” approaches. The 2022 vintage saw longer fruit hang times/extra maturity and fruit development. The meticulous attention and experience is evident in this exemplary bottle of wine.
TASTING NOTES: This wine has a rich and compelling nose of blackberry, black cherry, vanilla, and subtle notes of pine. This wine is structured firmly around deep flavors of brambly black fruits, blueberry and minerality. Supple, ripe tannins provide ample backbone. The finish is lengthy and layered. Decant to reveal the wine’s full complexity.
SUGGESTED FOOD PAIRING: The concentrated richness and marked acidity make this wine a remarkable partner for bold foods. We recommend hearty dishes like grilled steaks, mushroom dishes, or lamb with herbs. This wine will nicely hold up to strong cheeses such as aged gorgonzola, aged sharp cheddar or parmiagiano reggiano.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Meadowcroft Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a very pleasing aroma of black cherry and licorice plus touches of mint, vanilla and chocolate. Still young, it needs some time to breathe, but once it does it is really quite harmonious.
The wine, while still just a baby, is very balanced and features similar flavors to the nose with a bit of oaky spice and minerality wrapped up in a soft, smooth mouthfeel with fine tannins. As it breathes, the incredible depth of this rich and delicious wine is slowly revealed. Somehow it’s both easy to drink yet also has plenty of complexity.
This is a pretty classic rendition of a very high end Napa Cab at a much more reasonable price than you can typically find, especially with today’s discount.
It ends dry with a very long, lingering and dynamic finish. As a testament to its young age, the wine was perhaps even a bit better on day 2. This is excellent!
Pop open one bottle to now to experience it in its youth and then stash the others for a couple more years of further development. We put this one right at the very top of our 9 Taste Rating at 93 points.
