Oceano is back with another beautiful, single vineyard wine, this time a lovely Chardonnay aged 8 months in Burgundy French oak barrels. And although it does spend time in oak, the wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation allowing the pure, fresh fruit to shine through. (There’s no butter here.)
The 2021 Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard Chardonnay we are offering here today has also received some big scores including 92 points from Anthony Gismondi and 92+ points from Jancis Robinson. We concur, putting it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.

Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend. Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10).
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).
Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. 2021 Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard Chardonnay
Tasting Notes: Beautifully intense pale yellow gold. A bright nose of gardenias, jasmine, peach, lime, quince, green mango and honey. A fresh nectarine attack leads to a juicy mouth of apricot, lemon, grapefruit, kiwi and tangerine. A long refreshing Meyer lemon aftertaste lingers.
Vintage 2021 Summary: San Luis Obispo’s vintners reported a “dream vintage,” characterized by a cool growing season and only one heat spike in mid-June. The lack of heat events and moderate, cool weather in September and October made the window of opportunity much longer for picking at optimal grape maturity. Due to the cool growing season, 2021 was one of the latest harvests in recent memory. Yields were average to above average in size. Long hang time on the vines resulted in concentrated flavors and above average acidity and quality is outstanding.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard Chardonnay opens with pleasing aromas of lemon, green apple, touches of tropical fruit and a hint of sea salt. It’s an excellent start.
Tasting reveals no buttery or overly oaky notes, just the pure grape coming through. This is rather Chablis-like.
Featuring similar flavors to the nose with lots of grapefruit notes in the mouth, the wine is smooth and very flavorful with great depth and richness to the beautiful, juicy, sweet fruit. (It has some nice sweetness to the fruit even though it is a very dry wine with almost no residual sugar – only 1 gram for the entire bottle.) Add in plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and bright and this is just a pleasure to drink.
It ends crisp, dry and long with the return of the sea salt element on the lasting finish which also has a bit of chalkiness to it. This is simply excellent!!
