Up first, we’ve got the 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery Mustard Creek Zinfandel which is 78% Zinfandel and 22% Petite Sirah all from the Mustard Creek vineyard in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, California.

The wine was aged for around 18 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels (25% new) and has less just 1 g/L of residual sugar. Only 300 cases were produced. You will receive 2 bottles in today’s 4-pack.

From the winery:

VINIFICATION: Over the years we’ve found that the sooner we assemble Mustard Creek, the better it tastes. And so we blended the Petite Sirah and Zinfandel components in one 10 ton tank for primary fermentation. Allowed a three-day cold soak, this wine was essentially made once primary fermentation was complete. Similar to other tank fermentations of Zinfandel in 2021, cool temperature allowed for pronounced fruit flavors and aromas to remain elegant and focused. After 14 days of skin contact, these grapes were gently pressed, and the resulting wine allowed to settle for several weeks before barreling down. A selection of 25% new French and Hungarian Oak barrels were tapped for ageing and secondary fermentation. After completing malolactic fermentation, this wine was sulfited, and allowed several months to settle before being racked once again for bottling. Bottled in March of 2023, this wine received 6 months of bottle age prior to release.

TASTING NOTES: Tart raspberries, violets and vanilla pair with all the aromas of a coastal California oak forest. One can’t help but be transported to the Paso Robles countryside, surrounded by crunchy oak leaves and chalky soils. This classic Paso Zinfandel tastes of dusty strawberries and peach fuzz, a lightly gripping. lingering finish with notes of cedar, cinnamon and nutmeg suggests that the hints of brick in the margin already told you much of this wine’s story.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery Mustard Creek Zinfandel opens with an enticing, multi-faceted aroma of black cherry, strawberry, spice, cedar, cinnamon, touches of black pepper, licorice, mint, a hint of earthiness and more. It’s an awesome, savory start.

This is one super smooth Zin! Tasting the wine reveals all the same flavors from the nose with a smooth, round, creamy, very pleasing mouth-filling texture. It also has great depth and complexity.

It ends dry, very long and lingering with some spice tinged fruit and a lingering touch of hickory. It might have even been a bit better on day 2, I love it! We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).

Next, we’ve got the 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery The Odd One which comes from the Bailey, Mustang Springs Ranch, Old Schoolhouse and Thibido vineyards in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, California.

81% Zinfandel, 13% Carignan and 6% Mourvedre, the wine is aged around 18 months in French barrels and puncheons (30% new) and has just 1 g/L of residual sugar. Just 365 cases were produced. You will receive 2 bottles in today’s 4-pack.

From the winery:

VINIFICATION: Due to a combination of heat and pests, our yields at Mustang Springs Ranch were lower than in previous years. This resulted in some creative blending in the cellar to manifest this vintage of the Odd One. Several lots of Zinfandel from both the Old Schoolhouse Vineyard and Bailey Ranch were tapped to create the Zinfandel base for this wine. Additional lots of Carignan from Mustang Springs and Mourvedre from Thibido Vineyard help to round out this amalgamation. All of the various grapes that made their way to the final blend were destemmed and fermented in bins prior to being carefully pressed and settled for several days. The resulting wines were racked separately into French and Hungarian Oak barrels and puncheons to complete malolactic fermentation through the spring. When it came time to assemble the blends in late July 2022, the carefully selected barrels for this blend were racked into tank where we adjusted sulfites prior to returning the newly blended wine to 30% new French barrels and puncheons, the remainder living in neutral French barrels. This wine aged for an additional 8 months prior to bottling in March of 2023.

TASTING NOTES: Beautiful and dark from rim to rim, a nose of flint, coyote brush, cardamom and sage is supported by over-ripe strawberries, cedar-smoke and anise. A sip is mildly tannic upfront but bristles with blue and blackberries. Pine, vanilla and coffee grounds pair with Fernet, amaro and intense chalk. Fine limestone, coffee ice-cream and anise ride out a lengthy finish.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Peachy Canyon Winery The Odd One opens with pleasing aromas of blackberry, cinnamon, vanilla, cedar and lots of other touches. It’s a nice start.

Tasting the wine reveals similar flavors to the nose with some black pepper and a bit of a meaty note in the mouth as well. It also has nice touches of spice and dried herbs throughout. Smooth, round and medium-bodied this is an intriguing blend that is easy to drink while also possessing plenty of complexity. It’s quite an attractive mix of Zinfandel plus Rhone Valley.

It ends dry and long on the satisfying finish. It was even a bit better on day 2 where it was even more savory. This is lovely!
