Up first, let’s take a look at the Sangiovese. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.
From the winery:
Fred’s (Peterson) Vintaged View: This 100% Sangiovese was produced from fruit grown in two exceptional small plantings in Dry Creek Valley — Teldeschi Vineyard and Spadoni Vineyard. In the early 1990’s, lifelong grapegrower Ray Teldeschi got Sangiovese budwood from our Norton Ranch on Lytton Springs, and planted it on his “Home Ranch” that is next door to our winery on the Dry Creek bench. The southwest exposure and excellent drainage of the site helps the finicky Sangiovese vines fully ripen the grapes every year.
The Spadoni Vineyard is a tiny planting on the hillside behind the home of long time friends Ken and June Spadoni. They planted an acre of Sangiovese on the western edge of Dry Creek because of a love for the wine, and meticulously farm this small plot.
In 2019, Mother Nature gave us another bountiful harvest of this challenging grape. The overall large crop contained many small berries, allowing us to make a perfectly balanced wine.
Tasting Notes: This classic Italianate Sangiovese begins with aromas of cherry, cranberry and wild blackberry woven with traces of mineral-rich earthy notes. The bright acidity on the palate is balanced with mocha-laced flavors of cherry cola, cranberry and black plum. Traces of dried fine herbs, espresso and loamy earth appear late, but just in time to add a layer of depth as the flavors linger in the finish.
This wine pairs beautifully with any Italian meal or pasta entrée, but will also complement a rustic pork stew with red wine and olives, or a platter of beef short ribs.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Peterson Winery Dry Creek Valley Sangiovese begins with a very pleasing aroma of leather, black cherry, spice, licorice and black pepper with a little earth and some savory hints of dried herbs. Yum!
The wine is just as nice in the mouth with all those same flavors combining wonderfully. Featuring juicy, almost sweet fruit, good acidity and great balance and structure, this is a lovely example of Sangiovese from California. It’s especially good after it has an hour or so to open up.
Smooth with fine, round tannins yet still a bit rustic just like a good Sangiovese should be, it ends dry and extremely long with lots of lingering juicy fruit plus licorice and all the other touches from the nose lingering. It’s a simply awesome finish. And it was even a bit better on day 2!
Cheers,
Jon

Next, let’s take a look at the Zinfandel. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.
From the winery:
Jamie’s (Peterson) Vintaged View: Though most of our Zinfandels are made from Dry Creek Valley grapes, our Dry Creek blend, as we refer to it, is a wine that we hope reflects the overall Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel terroir, as opposed to a single-vineyard character. Selecting five vineyards (Funsten, Bradford Mountain Estate, Forchini, Bernier, and West) located throughout the appellation, gives us a cross section of soil types and microclimates within Dry Creek Valley that are reflected in the flavors.
Our 2019 Dry Creek blend is a very classic, claret-style Zinfandel. Accompanying the depth of fruit flavors, you’ll find richness, complexity, spice and earthiness. Compared to our other Zinfandels, this bottling contains the highest percentage of blending varietals to give maximum spice and an intriguing multifaceted quality without overwhelming the inherent “Zinniness” of the wine. The Petite Sirah gives the wine darker earth notes and more structure, while Carignane enhances the spiciness and bright acidity, and Grenache adds a luscious layer of fruit.
Tasting Notes: A medley of red fruit aromas fills the nose — ripe cherry, red plum and fresh sliced strawberry — along with a hint of pepper. Mouthwatering acidity greets the palate with bright flavors of red raspberry, Rainer cherry, wild strawberry and Santa Rosa plum. Traces of white pepper, cinnamon, dried oregano and violets mingle with the delicious fruit essence. A touch of minerality appears in the finish as the flavors linger on.
A great wine to open when enjoying calzones stuffed with fresh mozzarella, grilled onions, Sungold tomatoes and olive tapenade, or Moroccan chicken tagine served over basmati rice.
Composition: 88% Zinfandel (43% Bradford Mtn Est Vnyd harvested 10/2 & 10/8, 15% Funsten Vineyard harvested 9/17, 15% West Vineyard Hilltop Block harvested 9/16, 15% Bernier Zinyard harvested 9/9) plus 4% Petite Sirah West Vineyard harvested 9/27, 4% Carignane Forchini Vineyard harvested 9/23, 4% Grenache West Vineyard harvested 9/27.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Peterson Winery Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel opens with very pleasing and harmonious aromas of dark berry fruit, peppercorns and spice plus touches of vanilla, licorice, cola, cedar, leather and more.
Tasting the dry, balanced wine reveals great depth of flavor, beautiful juicy fruit and plenty of well-integrated spice along with licorice and touches of cola, vanilla and chocolate. The whole thing is wrapped up in a smooth mouthfeel and features lots of authentic Zin character that is enhanced by the addition of the Petite Sirah, Carignane and Grenache.
It ends dry, very long, juicy and spicy and was just as good on day 2. This is mouthwatering stuff. What a incredible duo of wines, don’t miss them!
Cheers,
Jon
