You may be familiar with our “Ask The Expert” series here at Reverse Wine Snob where we have winemakers answer all your burning questions. When it came time to address the topic of sweetness and residual sugar in wine we naturally turned to Scott, who started his career making sweet wines in Germany.
Why is that important? Because today’s Zinfandel puts that expertise to good use as Scott blends in a bit of his Port-style wine called Forte, which is made from traditional Portuguese varieties (and also sells for $50 a bottle).
The resulting wine, which is aged in oak, gains both a bit of sweetness (it has 8 g/L of residual sugar) and additional depth and character from the Forte. Big and with broad appeal, this wine will please both those who prefer dry wines and those who like their wines on the sweeter side.
Scott should know – he created the original Menage a Trois line of wines when he was the winemaker at Folie a Deux in the late 90s before the brand was sold to Sutter/Trinchero. However, unlike many of the popular grocery store brands that try to have this same appeal, there’s no Mega Grape or other additives to be found here.
This is nothing but good, honest, well-made, small batch wine (only 703 cases were produced). Add to that this is the definition of crowd-pleasing and this is a great wine to stock up on!

The 2019 Scott Harvey Inzinerator opens with lots of spicy dark fruit plus a little of that signature brambly Zin note. You can also definitely smell those Port-like notes on the nose.
Taking a sip reveals super crowd-pleasing stuff with the higher residual sugar but it also doesn't come off tasting too sweet at all, just delicious. Full-bodied and with lots of dark, jammy, raisin-ed berry fruit, there are plenty of rich, deep flavors. A smooth mouthfeel and lots of well integrated baking spice round things out.
It ends quite long and spicy with a hint of sweetness lingering on the lips. It's super and just as good day 2. Get some while you can!
