Let’s take a look at the 2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel first. Comprised of 97% Zinfandel and 3% Petite Sirah, it comes from the following vineyards in Amador County: 52% Bowman Vineyard, 42% Bray Vineyard, 5% Spinetta Vineyard and 1% Manby Vineyard.
From the winery:
Vineyard: Amador County is extremely well suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. These old head pruned dryland farmed vineyards produce low yields of extractive flavorful Zinfandel.
Tasting Notes: Fruit forward, rich full flavors expressing both the varietal and the Amador Terroir. This complex spicy wine has notes of bright raspberry, dark fruit, briary Zinfandel character with a fresh finish.

The 2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel begins with a wonderful, big, very spicy aroma of cherry, raspberry, vanilla, tons of licorice and more. It’s quite inviting, and it gains even more complexity as it has time in the glass.
Tasting reveals plenty of spicy fruit and licorice to go along with candied cherry flavors in this balanced and delicious wine. I almost want to describe it as liquid candy but that doesn’t really fit since this is a very dry wine with just 2 grams per liter of residual sugar. It is; however, extremely flavorful and also quite smooth.
And while previous iterations of this wine needed some time to breathe, this vintage is very balanced and harmonious right from get-go, although it still somehow gets even better with some air.
It ends dry and slightly grippy with tons of lasting fruit, licorice and spice and even a bit of a mineral edge. It’s fantastic and it was just as good on day 2.

From the winery:
Tasting Notes: Medium dark color with a briary varietal Zinfandel nose. Blackberry, mulberry, and violets add to this wine’s fleshy center and full body texture. The wine finishes with spicy fresh herbs showing a complete wine from beginning to end. Complexity with first growth quality.
Winemaker Notes: Produced in the old-world style of balanced winemaking. We want the wine to express varietal Zinfandel with good balance of fruit, French oak, structural tannins and medium alcohol.
Vintage Notes: The year of the Pandemic and excessive wildfires. Fortunately, neither effected the vintage. Turned out to be one of my top ten vintages with good balanced fruit and flavorful wine.

The 2020 Scott Harvey Winemakers Reserve Zinfandel opens with a big, enticing aroma full of ripe red and black cherry, strawberry, and a bit of mulberry and brambly fruit combined with licorice, baking spice and cedar. I love it!
The wine tastes beautifully balanced and delicious and features a round, super smooth, velvety mouthfeel and lots of ripe juicy fruit similar to the nose. Full-bodied and much more balanced than many of the over-the-top Zins out there but it’s not short on flavor either. Again, although it’s quite delicious right out of the bottle, you’ll want to give it some time to breathe to be at its absolute best.
It ends dry, long and savory and was just as good on day 2. Did I mention I love it?
